In Nigeria, bringing solar energy and sustainable access to clean water to rural communities in Akwa Ibom.

The state of Akwa Ibom, in southern Nigeria, faces persistent challenges in accessing clean water, especially in rural areas. Many communities depend on unsafe sources and costly diesel generators to pump water. The lack of reliable electricity and adequate infrastructure limits local development and increases public health risks. Recent projects aim to change this reality through solar-powered systems that ensure a continuous and sustainable supply of clean water.

The project aims to install solar systems at 50 water points, ensuring sustainable and continuous access to clean water for schools, health centers, and communities. By replacing diesel generators and an unreliable electrical grid with solar panels, it seeks to reduce costs and emissions while providing a stable and environmentally friendly supply.

In addition to the technical component, the initiative focuses on establishing local water management committees with strong female participation, responsible for maintaining and financially managing the systems. This community-based model strengthens local autonomy and accountability, promoting the efficient and long-term use of water infrastructure.

Expected outputs:

  • 50 functional solar-powered water points established (20 communities, 20 Health Centers, 10 schools), each with storage tanks and distribution networks
  • Community-led ownership and governance structures established for sustainable water point operation and maintenance through 50 Water Point Management Committees democratically elected with 7 members each (minimum 40% women representation) across targeted locations
  • 350 WPMC members trained in financial management, technical O&M, and hygiene promotion
  • Quarterly sensitization sessions conducted for schools, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) clubs, Health Centers (PHCs), and communities on safe water practices
  • Reliable access to clean water, reducing diesel dependency and operational costs by 85% and standardized procedures for sustainable water point management
  • Improved health and hygiene practices, reduced waterborne diseases, and enhanced maternal and reproductive health
  • Empower women and youth through inclusive governance and capacity building
  • Strengthened local capacity for financial sustainability, technical maintenance, and community health promotion
