Energy for future
Energy for future
In Brazil, access to public lighting for underprivileged communities.

In communities without adequate access to street lighting, a single light can mean greater safety, mobility and opportunities for those who live there. It is against this backdrop that EDP and Litro de Luz Brasil have been working together to bring sustainable lighting solutions to vulnerable communities.

Operating in over 15 countries, Litro de Luz’s mission is to improve people’s quality of life through simple and sustainable solutions. In partnership with the organisation, EDP has contributed to the installation of solar-powered lampposts in communities not connected to the public electricity grid.

The solution adopted combines simple and affordable materials, including PVC pipes, a battery that stores energy collected during the day, an LED bulb and a PET bottle that protects the entire system. This low-cost technology makes it possible to bring public lighting to places where it is needed and to make a real difference to the daily lives of these communities.

2019 | Nova Jabaeté, Espírito Santo

One of the first milestones of this partnership took place in 2019, with the installation of 60 solar-powered streetlights in the community of Nova Jabaeté, in Vila Velha.

The initiative involved 50 volunteers from EDP and members of the community, benefiting around 1,200 people. The introduction of street lighting has improved safety at night and created better conditions for leisure activities and local businesses.

2021 | Sahy Beach, São Paulo

Two years later, the partnership extended to the Praia do Sahy area in São Sebastião.

Thirty solar-powered streetlights were installed, directly benefiting the communities of Vila Sahy, Baleia Verde and Lobo Guará. The initiative involved 11 volunteers and brought lighting to around 120 families in areas that did not yet have regular access to the public electricity grid.

2026 | Suzano, São Paulo

In 2026, EDP and Litro de Luz joined forces once again for a new initiative in the community of Miguel Badra, in Suzano, São Paulo.

Throughout the project, volunteers helped to assemble and install 16 solar-powered streetlights in areas lacking public lighting. From start to finish, the community and staff worked side by side to create safer routes and improve conditions for local residents.

This initiative was marked by the strong involvement of EDP’s leadership. Of the 20 volunteers taking part, half were leaders from EDP teams, demonstrating that community transformation is achieved not only through support of projects, but also through the direct participation of those who help to shape them.
