With more than 16 GW in PPAs signed globally, EDP continues to be the partner of choice for the world’s leading companies seeking long-term renewable energy solutions tailored to their evolving needs.

Our latest agreement with a global technology company tied to EDP's 28MWp project in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, EDP, through EDP Renewables APAC, a global leader in renewable energy development, has announced the development of a greenfield 28MWp ground-mounted solar project in Motoyoshi City, Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. The project is linked to a long-term contract signed with a major technology company.

The solar farm is expected to span across 48 hectares of land and will feature more than 42,000 solar panels. Once operational, the project will generate approximately 33GWh of clean, reliable electricity annually, which will be injected directly into Japan's local grid to support domestic supply. This will avoid around 15,100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, based on Japan’s average grid emissions factor. Meanwhile, the technology company will retain the associated environmental attributes to advance its global decarbonisation targets.

Scheduled for commissioning in early 2028, the project supports Japan’s grid resilience and enhances the country’s overall energy security. Japan's 2030 climate targets and energy security goals can benefit from a diversified energy strategy. Renewables, particularly solar, offer the critical agility needed for rapid short-term deployment. This partnership adds to Japan's goal of 37% renewable energy share by 2030.

EDP continues to expand its presence in the APAC region, with a pipeline of more than 1.7GW renewables capacity till 2030, focused primarily on ground-mounted utility-scale solar projects and battery energy storage systems. With Japan positioned as one of its key growth markets in EDP’s APAC business plan 2026-2028, the company is focused on scaling projects that strengthen the nation’s energy resilience and diversify its domestic power mix for decades to come.

In Japan, the company is actively scaling its operations, managing a robust local pipeline of more than 500 MWp and the addition of the solar farm project in Motoyoshi marks another milestone in the company’s market expansion. This project establishes a strong foundation for the accelerated delivery of the company's ambitions in the market.

With more than 16 GW in PPAs signed globally, EDP continues to be the partner of choice for the world’s leading companies seeking renewable energy solutions tailored to their evolving needs. In Japan and across other regions, EDP works closely with its partners as a trusted energy advisor, structuring customized PPAs and delivering a broader portfolio of energy solutions designed to support their decarbonization strategies, operational requirements and long-term
business objectives.
