EDP selects seven startups for the Energy Starter bootcamp focused on client solutions
Startups from Singapore, India, Germany, Argentina, and the United States are among the finalists participating on May 26 and 27 in an event in Lisbon to explore pilot projects for future implementation.
The third and final stage of the 9th edition of Energy Starter – EDP’s global open innovation program that promotes co-innovation with startups and scaleups – is now entering the bootcamp phase, following the selection of seven international startups. On May 26 and 27, EDP will host the finalists at its headquarters in Lisbon, where they will work alongside company experts to accelerate the development of pilot projects and new business opportunities focused on client solutions – a central pillar of EDP’s strategy to contribute to the global energy transition, as companies play a key role in the decarbonization of countries.
This new phase represents the decisive moment in the selection process for the “Client Solutions” module, with startups selected from India, Singapore, Germany, Argentina, and three from the United States. Among the solutions proposed in this edition, innovative projects stand out in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, storage, and solar technologies.
“With thousands of clients across multiple markets, EDP continuously seeks innovation in client solutions, particularly through startups, to accelerate energy efficiency and sustainability in energy consumption – a commitment that is part of our DNA,” says Tomás Moreno, Head of EDP’s Innovation Ecosystem. “In this edition, we have brought together seven startups with very strong solution proposals for clients. Now, throughout the bootcamp, EDP teams will work closely with each startup to further define the challenge, assess technical feasibility, and design the pilot, with a focus on results and real-world applicability,” he adds. “This joint effort accelerates the transition from innovation to implementation and consistently supports the decarbonization of clients.”
The bootcamp will take place over two days to foster multiple interactions between EDP and the startups. The first day will be dedicated to team presentations and program onboarding, allowing startups to better understand EDP’s context and challenges. In the afternoon, one-on-one meetings will be held to assess the alignment between identified challenges and the solutions presented.
The second day will primarily feature individual meetings between EDP and the startups to further develop the pilot projects. These sessions will provide an opportunity to detail the challenges to be addressed and each solution’s contribution, with a view to defining an initial project framework, including required resources and timelines.
Following the bootcamp, the focus will shift to developing and implementing the identified pilot projects, with the goal of validating solutions in real-world environments and potentially establishing long-term partnerships.
The selected startups are:
- Trinano (India), with advanced coatings for solar panels
- Blue Whale Energy (Singapore), with modular solar solutions combined with batteries
- Heatrix (Germany), with electric solutions for high-temperature industrial heating
- HD Photovoltaics (Argentina), with building-integrated solar solutions
- AI Clearing (USA), with an artificial intelligence platform for solar construction monitoring
- Inlyte Energy (USA), focused on long-duration energy storage
Clear Current (USA), with smart energy management for businesses
Across EDP’s startup innovation initiatives — in addition to the Energy Starter program — the results are significant: 201 pilot projects developed, 45 rollouts completed, and 31 investments made, generating a total of €133 million in business.
In addition to this module, the 9th edition of Energy Starter also included initiatives dedicated to innovative solutions for the future of power grids and renewable energy. To learn more, visit the program website at www.theenergystarter.com.
