EDP remains responsible for energy supply across 28 municipalities in the state of São Paulo

EDP has renewed, for a further 30 years, its electricity distribution concession covering the 28 municipalities where it operates in the state of São Paulo. The signing ceremony took place on Friday, 8 May, at an event in Brasília, attended by the President of Brazil, Luiz Lula da Silva, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, the CEO of EDP in South America, João Brito Martins, among other representatives of the entities involved.

With this renewal, EDP will remain responsible for electricity distribution in the regions of Guarulhos, Alto Tietê, Vale do Paraíba and the North Coast of São Paulo until 2058. The decision follows the new evaluation model introduced by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).

“This important milestone we celebrate today materially reinforces our commitment to Brazil, which began 30 years ago and is now renewed for another 30 years. I would like to thank the Presidency of Brazil, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Aneel and our customers for their trust in EDP’s consistent track record. It is recognition of a journey marked by overcoming challenges: we achieved universal access to electricity and reached record levels of service quality, while making our grid more digital and resilient,” said João Brito Martins, CEO of EDP in South America.

Securing this renewal in the year EDP marks its 50th anniversary as a company and 30 years of operations in Brazil marks the beginning of a new chapter in a successful story, in the first country where EDP internationalised its business. This achievement reinforces the company’s commitment to the development of the state of São Paulo and Brazil and, above all, recognises the dedication of its teams.

Operations in São Paulo

EDP serves 2.2 million residential, rural and industrial customers in the state of São Paulo. In line with its commitment to service quality and infrastructure expansion, the company plans to invest R$5 billion (around €865 million) by 2030 in its concession area — an increase of around 30% compared with investments made between 2019 and 2024. This additional investment will be directed towards improving customer service processes, energy infrastructure, digitalisation and system automation, as well as strengthening the resilience of electricity distribution networks, which is essential in the context of climate change.

EDP is also active in the social impact arena. The company is committed to generating a positive impact in the communities where it operates, through projects aligned with their specific needs and fully connected to EDP’s global strategy. These initiatives promote education and the energy transition, contributing continuously to social development and delivering tangible benefits to local populations.

Over the past five years, more than R$28 million (close to €5 million) has been invested in 102 social projects across EDP São Paulo’s concession area, benefiting more than 500,000 people. One example is the Comunidade IN programme, part of the company’s strategy to lead a just energy transition, which aims to support regional development through initiatives focused on education, professional training, income generation, decent housing, access to culture and leisure, conscious consumption, energy quality, access to energy, digital inclusion and waste awareness.

Safety is EDP’s most important value. Through educational initiatives, the company is also present in local communities, delivering actions that actively help minimise risks and raise awareness of safe behaviour around electricity.

EDP in South America operates across the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of energy, as well as in the development, construction and maintenance of wind and solar assets. In Brazil, EDP also offers energy solutions tailored to the B2B market, such as distributed solar generation and energy sales in the free market. Its distribution operations serve around 3.8 million customers in the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo.stado de São Paulo e no estado do Espírito Santo.
