EDP commissions the Iberian Peninsula’s first triple hybrid renewable energy project

EDP has taken another step forward in bringing flexible renewable energy generation solutions to market. The energy group has started testing the battery storage module at its hybrid renewable energy site in Las Lomillas, located in Cuenca, Spain, where three renewable technologies are integrated through a single grid connection point. The site combines 122 MW of wind, solar and battery storage capacity, maximising the use of energy infrastructure with approximately 50 MW of grid export capacity.
This is the first project of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. The current battery testing phase is the precursor to its imminent commissioning.
The site has evolved significantly since the installation of a wind farm in 2005, comprising 33 wind turbines with a total capacity of 49.5 MW. In 2025, a 36 MW solar plant was added and, more recently, a 36 MW (72 MWh) battery energy storage system. Altogether, the site now totals 122 MW across three technologies that optimise renewable generation while enhancing the stability and flexibility of the electricity system, supporting greater integration of clean energy into the grid.
The three technologies are managed through an energy management system that takes operational decisions based on algorithms and under the supervision of EDP’s energy management teams and control centre. Installed at the site's electrical substation, the system determines whether it is more efficient to inject wind and solar power directly into the grid, store it in batteries, or even charge the batteries from the grid for later discharge when required.
With the commissioning of these batteries at Las Lomillas, EDP is taking a decisive step towards a more flexible and efficient renewable generation model. The integration of battery storage makes it possible to transform this inherently intermittent renewable asset into a virtually dispatchable facility, capable of adapting its output to the needs of the electricity system while making the best possible use of its grid connection.
The project also helps address one of the key challenges of the energy transition: limited availability of grid access and connection capacity. By optimising existing infrastructure, it enables greater renewable energy integration without the need to develop new evacuation points.
The Las Lomillas battery storage facility, with a capacity of 36 MW and 72 MWh, is part of the IDAE Support Programme for Innovative Energy Storage Projects Hybridised with Renewable Electricity Generation Facilities, under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. The project received funding of up to €6.2 million.
EDP is a pioneer in hybrid renewable projects across the Iberian Peninsula, with almost 1 GW of hybridised capacity. In Spain, it has commissioned the Cruz de Hierro project (28.8 MW, Ávila), Villacastín (28.2 MW, Segovia), Castillo de Garcimuñoz (46.4 MW, Cuenca) and Rabosera (40 MW, Zaragoza), all combining wind and solar generation. With the full hybridisation of Las Lomillas now operational, the company surpasses 260 MW of hybridised capacity in Spain.
EDP also operates hybrid renewable sites in Portugal, a pioneering country in this model and home to the first project of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. Together, these projects represent almost 700 MW and include: Alto Rabagão, 68,2 MW (hydropower and floating solar); Alqueva, 527 MW (hydropower, floating solar and batteries); Mina de Orgueirel, 19,3 MW; Monte de Vez, 42,7 MW; and Charneca das Lebres, 39,3 MW (the latter three combine wind and solar generation).
In Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, EDP currently operates 10 wind farms and two hybrid solar power plants, with more than 480 MW of installed capacity.
