EDP officiates 44MWp solar project for Amazon in Japan
EDP, through EDP Renewables APAC, has successfully marked the commissioning of a 44 Megawatt-peak (MWp) utility-scale solar project in Fukushima Japan with a Shinto blessing ceremony for operations. The project operates under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon, supporting the company's goal to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.
The solar farm spans 60 hectares of repurposed land from a defunct golf course. It is structured with over 63,000 solar panels and stands as EDP’s largest solar project in Japan to date. It is expected to generate over 48GWh of energy annually.
The project is now fully operational and generating high yields. Notably, it exceeded the forecasted energy output during its testing and commissioning phases. It is now recording an energy availability rate greater than 98%, establishing a strong performance baseline that surpasses average metrics for new power plants.
This is the second PPA between EDP and Amazon in the APAC region, following a solar project in Singapore in 2021. The agreement is part of a strategic collaboration that started in 2015 with a wind farm in Ohio and continues to build. Globally, Amazon has now contracted more than 1.4 GW of renewable capacity across multiple EDP projects.

EDP has ambitious plans to establish itself as an enabler of Japan’s energy strategy through the development of a domestic project pipeline of more than 500 MWp through to 2030 and beyond, directly contributing towards the country’s goals for energy independence. Beyond solar, EDP’s renewables strategy mix in Japan also includes battery energy storage systems (BESS). The company aims to aggressively increase its portfolio of BESS projects to ensure a continuous, reliable power supply that mitigates generation variability and strengthens the national grid.
With this milestone in Japan, EDP continues to execute its strategy to accelerate global electrification, focusing on high-quality, long-term contracted assets that deliver secure, stable power and create lasting value for clients and communities.
