EDP and Bondalti inaugurate pioneering industrial-scale battery storage system in Portugal
The installation, part of Bondalti’s REPOWER industrial transformation and decarbonization project, demonstrates how the combination of renewable generation, energy storage and electrification is key to industrial competitiveness and energy resilience.
A pioneering energy storage system in Portugal, developed by EDP for Bondalti, was inaugurated today as part of the REPower Chemicals project. The project's completion was marked this afternoon at a public event attended by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.
Announced in 2025, this modular system accelerates the energy transition of Bondalti’s operations and demonstrates how combining renewable generation, energy storage and electrification can play a central role in strengthening industrial competitiveness and energy resilience. It is the first modular industrial-scale energy storage installation of its kind in Portugal.
EDP and Bondalti have been partners since 2018, with the partnership evolving over the years to support the sustainability commitments of Portugal’s leading chemical company. This journey has now culminated in the installation of a battery energy storage system with 12 MW of power and 12 MWh of storage capacity.
The system enables energy to be stored when it is most cost-effective and used when it is most needed, increasing operational flexibility and strengthening the resilience of Bondalti’s plant against grid peaks or outages.
EDP was also responsible for expanding the electrical substation and adapting the grid infrastructure at Bondalti’s facility. These are key elements of the energy transition, helping to create an energy hub that maximizes solar energy use while supporting the electrification of industrial operations.

More than a technological project, this initiative illustrates how the energy transition is entering a new phase, in which the challenge is no longer simply to produce renewable energy but also to integrate it efficiently into companies’ operations. This is particularly relevant for energy-intensive industries, where the generation, consumption, and storage of renewable energy are becoming increasingly strategic to the business.
The installation of the battery energy storage system and the expansion of the electrical substation are part of Bondalti’s industrial transformation and decarbonization project, REPower Chemicals, which received support from Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. The project will enable Bondalti to avoid more than 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, representing a significant step towards delivering on the company’s sustainability and energy transition commitments.
