MAAT Tactile Models

Objective: Project and design of a model of the MAAT with tactile models for people with visual impairments

Purpose: Portable model in the shape of a suitcase for use when visiting MAAT

Process: Parametric 3D CAD design, rapid prototyping/digital fabrication using additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques (3D printing, laser cutting and CNC machining of the suitcase in expanded PVC).

Development: Rhinoceros 3D modeling; CNC machining of expanded PVC for the suitcase structure, 3D printing of scale models, and laser cutting of acrylics and felt.

Fablab EDP, together with the EDP Foundation, developed a concept and prototyped a portable suitcase with the MAAT model, allowing visually impaired visitors to feel the spaces during their visit. One of the innovations of this project is to allow the user to feel textures on the roof that simulate grass and the Tejo River near the stairs in front of the MAAT, through a water tank that is placed on the model. The model consists of the internal spaces, the surrounding external spaces, and the roof
