Every story has a beginning and ours started five decades ago - thanks to the people who built it with us . Through trials and errors, achievements and milestones, this is the journey that shaped the EDP we are today.

1976

Creation of EDP following the merger of 13 nationalised companies

On 30 June 1976, EDP is created by decree-law following the April 1974 Revolution, merging 13 regional utilities across mainland Portugal.

Launch of the Portuguese electrification plan

The electrification plan launches to bring power to every settlement in Portugal with more than 50 residents, vital for national progress.

Commissioning of the Sines Thermoelectric Power Plant

Sines thermal power plant enters service (1256 MW) and, by the mid-1990s, supplies up to one-third of Portugal’s electricity needs nationwide.

Commissioning of the first wind farm in Portugal

Portugal’s first wind farm comes to life in Porto Santo, Madeira. It starts on a kW scale, but clearly shows where Portugal’s energy mix is heading.

Opening of the Electricity Museum in Portugal

Lisbon’s Central Tejo opened as the Museum of Electricity, preserving a landmark of Portugal’s energy history for the public.

First steps towards internationalisation

EDP takes its first international step in Brazil, by acquiring 21% of CERJ, an electricity distributor serving Rio de Janeiro.

Beginning of the first phase of EDP’s privatisation process

EDP’s first privatisation phase sold 29.99% of share capital via a public offer in Portugal and a direct sale to institutional investors.

Commissioning of the first wind farm in Spain

EDP’s first wind farm in Spain comes into operation, marking the Group’s growing interest in wind energy.

Incorporation of EDP Comercial in Portugal

EDP Comercial is created to compete in the liberalised market, offering integrated energy and services to clients.

Incorporation of EDP Distribuição in Portugal

EDP Distribuição is created to manage Portugal’s electricity distribution grids, through the merger of four utilities.

1st occupational health and safety certification

EDP implemented a safety management system according to the OHSAS 18001 standard to control risks, reduce accidents and improve well-being.

Creation of EDP Innovation

To promote and monitor technological innovations that impact the business, with a focus on researching new technologies, EDP Innovation is created.

Creation of the EDP Foundation in Portugal

The EDP Foundation is a non-profit institution that supports science, culture, and social action through projects and patronage.

Acquisition of full control of Hidrocantábrico in Spain

EDP strengthened its stake in the Spanish company HidroCantábrico, marking one of the largest international investments by a Portuguese company.

Listing of EDP Brasil on the São Paulo Stock Exchange

The IPO required simplifying the corporate structure, a process started in 2000 and completed shortly before the company’s listing.

Foundation of EDP Renewables

Created to drive value, innovation and green energy, the company quickly became a renewables leader and expanded its presence to Poland.

Entrance in the North American Market

EDP entered the US market by acquiring Horizon Wind Energy, becoming the world’s fourth-largest wind energy producer at the time.

Creation of the EDP Institute in Brazil

By engaging stakeholders across social, environmental, cultural and sports areas, the institute strengthens the EDP Group’s impact in Brazil.

1st recognition in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

EDP is one of the 12 best electric utilities listed in the DJSI worldwide and one of the 7 top electric companies in Europe.

EDP Renewables IPO and listing in Euronext Lisbon

The Group launched the IPO of EDP Renewables on the Lisbon Stock Exchange, placing around 25% of its capital and marking its entry into the public market.

Commissioning of the Lares Thermoelectric Power Plant

Commissioning of the Lares Combined Cycle Power Plant, located in Coimbra, Portugal, with 862 MW of capacity.

Launch of pilot Access to Energy project in a refugee camp

EDP and UN launched a pilot project in Kakuma, Kenya, delivering solar and wind energy to over 50,000 refugees.

Launch of Access to Energy program in developing countries

The A2E Fund promotes access to clean, affordable and reliable energy, with projects in 5 sectors: education, health, water, community and businesses.

Inauguration of WindFloat, the first offshore wind farm in Portugal

The 25 MW floating platform is the first pile-free offshore wind project using a semi-submersible platform in open Atlantic waters.

1st recognition by Ethisphere

EDP was first distinguished as one of the world's most ethical companies in 2012, and we have renewed this recognition every year since.

Commissioning of our first solar plant in Romania

EDP inaugurates its first solar photovoltaic plant in Romania, adding 39 MW of solar capacity.

Full privatisation

On February 14th, EDP became officially 100% private following a privatisation process that lasted 17 years.

Launch of Fundación EDP in Spain

Fundación EDP in Spain is created, advancing energy and environmental knowledge through education, research and social innovation.

Inauguration of EDP’s new headquarters in Lisbon

The modern, award-winning building is recognised for its efficient and sustainable design in a prime location between the hills and the river.

Opening of MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology)

This cultural space in Lisbon, Portugal, promotes international dialogue, inspires creative innovation and bridges history with contemporary visions.

Commissioning of Venda Nova III Hydro Power Plant

With an installed capacity of 756 MW, it is a key infrastructure for the security of the Portuguese power system and the integration of wind energy.

1st Top Employer recognition

EDP has been recognised every year since as one of the best companies to work for in several countries

Acquisition of Spanish energy company Viesgo with Macquarie

The deal added 52k km of grid, 1.3M supply points and 0.5GW of renewables, strengthening EDP’s leadership in the energy transition.

Launch of Ocean Winds, an EDPR and Engie offshore wind joint venture

A joint venture focused on fixed and floating offshore wind, created to scale global projects and rank among the world’s top five operators.

Closure of Sines Thermoelectric Power Plant

The plant’s shutdown ended coal use ahead of national targets, cutting around 12% of Portugal’s greenhouse gas emissions and reducing key pollutants.

Acquisition of 85% stake in US solar company C2

The acquisition adds 89MW of distributed solar and marks EDPR’s entry into the distributed generation segment in the United States.

Auction win for Celg-T transmission network

EDP acquired 100% of Celg-T’s 756 km grid and 14 substations in Goiás, reinforcing its strategic growth in transmission networks in Brazil.

Reinforcement of presence in Asia-Pacific renewables

EDPR acquired a majority stake in Singapore’s Sunseap, adding 540 MW of solar and a large renewables portfolio to enter key Asia-Pacific markets.

Production of the first green hydrogen molecule in Brazil

The Ceará pilot facility produced EDP Brazil’s first green hydrogen molecule, marking progress in scaling renewable H₂ solutions and innovation projects.

Entrance in the German solar market with Kronos acquisition

EDPR acquired a 70% stake in Kronos Solar, gaining a platform in Germany and the Netherlands and expanding its presence in European renewables.

Launch of a new brand identity

The new global identity reflects the company's ambition to lead the energy transition and its purpose: our energy and heart drive a better tomorrow

Inauguration of floating solar power plant in Alqueva, Portugal

With almost 12,000 photovoltaic panels, this is the first and largest floating solar park in Europe in a dam reservoir and a pioneer in hybridisation.

1st EDPR stand-alone battery storage project

The project was acquired from Tupa Energy and supports grid resilience by providing stability and allowing increased renewables penetration in the UK.

Commissioning of the first hybrid solar and wind energy park

This is the 1st project of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula, combining the Mina de Orgueirel solar plant and the Mosteiro wind park in Portugal.

Entrance in the Australian market

The acquisition of local renewables company ITP Development enabled wind, solar and storage energy projects in a high-potential market in APAC.

100% smart meter coverage in Portugal and Spain

Smart meters increase predictability, improve process efficiency, reduce operating costs and encourage more efficient consumption habits.

Sale of remaining stake in Pecém thermal plant in Brazil

EDP reaches agreement to sell its remaining 20% stake in this coal-fired power plant, retaining management of the renewable hydrogen project in Pecém.

Achievement of over 15 GW in global PPAs

EDP reached 15 GW of contracted capacity with some of the largest global companies, reinforcing our position as a trusted energy partner across sectors.

Scaling digital automation across EDP operations

EDP is accelerating the use of automation and robotics to monitor, manage and maintain assets, while investing in the digital upskilling of our workers.
