EDP reaches agreement to sell 20% of the Pecém coal-fired power plant in Brazil
The operation represents EDP's definitive exit from the plant in the Brazilian state of Ceará, following the sale of 80% completed about a year and a half ago. Green hydrogen production continues at the same Pecém complex.
EDP, through EDP Brasil, has reached an agreement with Diamante Geração de Energia for the sale of the 20% stake it still holds in Pecém Geração de Energia. The operation, which represents the total exit from the company that manages the coal-fired power plant in the Brazilian state of Ceará, involves a total amount of 0.20 billion reais.
The company had already sold 80% of its stake in the same Pecém company to a group of Brazilian investors coordinated by Mercurio Asset at the end of 2023, thus completing a sale operation that had begun in September of that year.
At the same time, EDP also announced that it would retain 100% management of the renewable hydrogen project at the Pecém complex. This pilot project produced the first molecule of green hydrogen in December 2022, the first produced by the EDP group globally and also the first in Brazil, which was a significant milestone in the group and country's energy transition.
The sale of 20% in Pecém, still subject to regulatory checks and other usual conditions in operations of this nature, also represents another decisive step by EDP on the path to decarbonization.
The company continues to develop energy conversion plans in various locations where it has plants – not only in Brazil, but also in Portugal and Spain – and to invest in the development of innovative and sustainable energy solutions, such as green hydrogen.
