The participants share some of the initiatives through which EDP is leading the energy transition in Asturias.

EDP today inaugurated its pavilion at the 68th edition of the Asturias International Fair of Samples (FIDMA- Feria Internacional de Muestras de Asturias) with a proposal that makes its employees the main spokespersons for the energy transformation taking place in the region. Under the slogan "We choose Asturias", the site gives a face and a voice to those who are making this transition possible from within, with their knowledge, commitment and connection to the region.

The pavilion offers a tour through some of the projects that are already redefining the way energy is generated, stored and distributed in Asturias. Through the testimonies of EDP employees and collaborators, from technicians and engineers to volunteers, visitors gain a close-up and realistic view of a transition that is already underway, with a direct impact on the environment and people's lives.

During the presentation of the pavilion, three of its sixteen projects were unveiled, showcasing how EDP is driving the energy transition in Asturias.

The first is the Soto de Ribera redox flow battery, the largest on the peninsula connected to the grid. This system, developed in collaboration with HydraRedox and Inerco, is the first step towards transforming the former thermal power plant into a green hub. With a capacity of 1.05 MWh, it will allow this technology to be tested for renewable energy management, supporting the transition to a more flexible system. "This project marks a turning point in energy management in Asturias," notes Daniel González-Lamuño, project director. “It allows us to make the most of renewable generation and opens the door to new storage solutions that, until recently, were out of reach.” The Redox2025 initiative represents an investment of €2.8 million, €1.2 million of which comes from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (IDAE).

The second project is the Pilotuerto energy hybridisation lab in Tineo, pioneering the integration of hydroelectric generation with Archimedes screws, solar and wind power, and storage. "What we are doing at Pilotuerto is unique in Spain," highlights José Ramón González, project manager. It reaches 718 kW of power (700 hydraulic, 10 solar and 3 wind)and can generate 3,500 MWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of 1,000 homes. Its 42 kWh and 80 kW battery could power 140 homes for two hours. “It is a laboratory where we test how different renewable sources interact, with the aim of achieving a more stable and environmentally friendly system.” The investment, worth XXX euros, has the support of Enfasys, Norvento, Taxus and Alysis.

The third is the modernisation of the Proaza hydroelectric power station, with an investment of €4 million to improve its performance and flexibility. "Modernising Proaza means preparing a historic facility for the future," says Emilio Fernández, Director of EDP's Hydraulic Power Plants in Spain and project manager. “This power station has been part of the lives of many generations, and now we are equipping it with advanced technology so that it can continue to play a key role in the energy transition.” These upgrades will increase electricity production by 4%, from 80 to over 83 GWh per year, enough to power almost 25,000 households (the entire municipality of Siero).

During the Asturias International Fair of Samples, visitors will be able to learn about these three projects and thirteen others featured in the pavilion, with explanations from EDP representatives, all highlighting innovation, sustainability and commitment to Asturias. With this pavilion, the company reaffirms its commitment to leading the energy transition through local talent and positioning Asturias as a leader in new energy solutions that create development, jobs and opportunities for the region.
