Solar energy
We harness the power of the sun
At EDP, we believe in the limitless potential of solar energy.
As an abundant and renewable resource, sunlight is essential for life on Earth and serves as a clean and sustainable source of electricity. Solar energy can be harnessed anywhere the sun shines, making it a vital component in building a greener and more resilient energy system.
As part of our commitment to a sustainable future, we continue to expand and innovate in solar energy. By making this clean, affordable energy accessible to everyone, we are helping to drive the energy transition and ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

Centralized Solar Energy
These are large installations, such as solar parks. The energy generated is transmitted through electrical grids to be distributed to various locations.
Decentralized Solar Energy
It is more common in residential or commercial and business installations. The energy generated can be consumed locally.
Our commitment to solar extends to both large-scale and decentralised projects, ensuring a robust renewable energy landscape.

EDP has invested significantly in hybridization as a way to promote a more sustainable future. Learn more about what we have been doing in this area.
EDP develops and operates solar energy projects across different markets, including large-scale solar plants and decentralised generation solutions for homes and businesses. Solar energy is a key part of EDP's renewable energy portfolio and its strategy for expanding renewable electricity generation.
EDP develops both large-scale centralised solar projects and decentralised solar generation. Large-scale plants supply renewable electricity to the energy system, while decentralised solutions generate energy closer to where it is consumed, including through rooftop and on-site installations for homes and businesses.
EDP combines solar generation with other technologies through hybrid projects and energy storage solutions. Hybridisation can bring solar together with other renewable generation at the same site, while battery storage can store electricity for use at a different time, increasing the flexibility of renewable energy projects.
EDP has more than 6.5 GW of installed solar capacity across its global operations. Solar represents around 23% of the company's total installed capacity, with projects across North America, Europe, South America and Asia-Pacific.
