Modernising the networks in an electrified world
The challenges of electricity transmission and distribution networks are strengthening and modernising structures, increasing efficiency levels and preparing them for a growing electrified world with increasingly distributed resources. Digitisation will also play a key role in supporting this transition, by automating numerous processes and increasing the network's intelligence.
It is important to adapt the world's networks to the increase in energy consumption - driven by increasing electrification and population growth, without forgetting new requirements and means of use, such as electric mobility, and the high diversity and intermittence of renewable energy generation sites. This is the path that EDP has been following, investing in renewables, but also in solutions for better network management.

EDP operates electricity distribution networks that connect the power system to homes, businesses and other consumers. Through its network operators, EDP manages and develops infrastructure that distributes electricity and supports the integration of new consumption and generation into the energy system.
EDP operates electricity distribution networks across three regions: Iberia, Brazil and North America. Its network activities are managed through six distribution system operators serving different geographical areas.
EDP is investing in digitalisation, automation and smart grid technologies to make its electricity networks more flexible and resilient. These developments help networks manage changing patterns of electricity generation and consumption and integrate distributed energy resources and increasing electrification.
EDP operates approximately 393,000 kilometres of electricity distribution networks across its global operations, serving more than 12 million connection points through six distribution system operators in Iberia, Brazil and North America.
