EDP secures largest distributed solar energy contract in Italy
Verallia, a company specialized in sustainable glass packaging, has chosen EDP for a 15MWp solar energy contract. The partnership is the largest announced so far by EDP in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.
Verallia, European leader in the production of glass containers for food and beverages, has chosen EDP Comercial to install five photovoltaic plants to supply renewable electricity to the company's plants in Italy. The five plants will have a total installed capacity of 15MWp, making this the largest contract so far announced by EDP in a single country for the installation of solar parks. The production of clean energy generated by this partnership could reach 16GWh per year.
The project includes the construction of plants in the Italian regions of Verona, Savona, Mantua and Vicenza. In total, about 28,000 solar panels will be installed over an area of more than 142,000 square meters, which will allow Verallia to avoid the emission of about 8,000 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to the pollutant emissions of 8,000 combustion vehicles. The first park to be installed will be supplying Verallia with renewable energy as early as the beginning of next year.
"The collaboration with an international reference company like Verallia will allow us to accelerate the growth trend we are experiencing in Italy and to consolidate EDP's global growth in this very important segment for energy transition. Each customer that adheres to solar energy is making a contribution to an economy that is less dependent on polluting sources and, in the case of Verallia, we are talking about a decisive contribution, with the installation of 15MWp that will produce clean energy", states Vera Pinto Pereira, EDP's director.
"Sustainability is at the heart of Verallia's energy agenda," says Marco Ravasi, CEO of Verallia Italia. "The agreement signed with EDP Energia Italia is strategic for us because it allows us to collaborate with one of the world's leading players in renewable energy solutions for businesses, giving a strong boost to our commitment to energy transition, one of the pillars of our roadmap to reduce CO2 emissions by 46% by 2030."
Since 2020, EDP Comercial has grown significantly in the Italian market, where it has strengthened its contracted solar capacity by 5 times, comparing the 10 months of 2022 and the year 2021. Currently, together with Enertel, the solar company it acquired last year, it has more than 70 MWp contracted in that country.
