EDP has already installed over 700,000 solar panels in Spain and Portugal
EDP has installed over 700,000 solar panels in Spain and Portugal, reducing monthly energy costs by up to 30% for over 100,000 families. The planet has also benefited, as emissions of over 400,000 tons of CO2 have been avoided, while solar installations also make a significant contribution to energy independence.
The year 2022 set a new record for the number of solar panels for self-consumption installed in Spanish and Portuguese family homes: nearly 40,000 residential customers adopted EDP solar solutions during the year, enabling the company to pass the milestone of 100,000 installations in family homes on the Iberian Peninsula.
Since EDP began developing solar energy projects, it has attained more than 137MWp of installed capacity with 700,000 solar panels at homes in Spain and Portugal, making a decisive contribution to the energy transition for these families. The EDP solutions have also enabled the families to save up to 30% on monthly bills – or 70% when a storage battery is included. The energy produced by these installations would be enough to supply renewable energy to 500,000 people per month, the equivalent to the whole population of Lisbon – or of Múrcia, in Spain – being supplied by solar energy alone.
"Solar energy is reaching ever more families and businesses around the world. Passing the milestone of over 100,000 installations at customer homes and the significant growth we are seeing in the different countries where we operate are clear signs of the role the sun will play in accelerating the European energy transition and energy independence," said Vera Pinto Pereira, Executive Director of EDP.
Adopting solar energy also benefits the environment, since consuming this electricity avoids the carbon emissions from sources burning fossil fuels. The more than 100,000 families adopting EDP solar energy have already avoided emitting over 40,000 tons of CO2 into the environment.
Last year, the company installed an average of 170 solar panels per day on the Iberian Peninsula. EDP also has business customers joining solar projects in Spain and Portugal, as well as in Italy, Poland, Brazil, Asia and the United States. In total, the company has already exceeded 1.6 GWp of distributed solar capacity.
