EDP chosen by ALDI Portugal for the largest electric mobility partnership in the national public grid
ALDI Portugal has chosen EDP to install and operate more than 650 fast-charging points in its shops in mainland Portugal. This is the largest electric mobility partnership ever carried out in the country and also the largest closed by EDP in the Iberian Peninsula.
EDP Comercial was chosen by ALDI, one of the leading retail companies at national and European level, to provide electric mobility solutions that will be available in all shops in the country with car parks bearing the brand's logo. This partnership provides for the installation of charging points, both in the more than 140 stores with existing car parks, as well as in the new ALDI stores that will open throughout this and next year. EDP Comercial will also start operating the chargers that are already installed in 34 of these shops. In total, the partnership integrates more than 650 charging points into the MOBI.E public grid, which can be used by any driver and with all Electric Mobility Power Suppliers (CEME) cards.
The power of the rapid chargers to be installed in the shops' car parks will vary between 60kW and 120kW. ALDI customers will be able to choose at what speed they want to recharge their vehicle while they shop.
With this partnership, EDP and ALDI promote decarbonisation and reduce the environmental footprint of their customers, contributing to the supermarket chain's ambitious sustainability targets.
Faced with the challenges of climate change, limited natural resources, biodiversity loss and growing demand, acting sustainably is strategic and essential for ALDI Portugal. The sustainability work of ALDI Nord Group, to which ALDI Portugal belongs, is based on four main areas: climate protection, responsible and sustainable supply chains, more environmentally friendly packaging and the fight against food waste. In particular and with regard to climate protection, the retailer is targeting a 55% reduction in emissions across the Group (ALDI Nord) by 2030.
One of the leading companies in investment in electric mobility in Portugal, EDP Comercial has sought to expand its public charging infrastructure in convenient locations that provide the best charging experience, as well as the right power for the available charging time, for electric vehicle users, through partnerships with companies present in the daily lives of consumers. It is therefore important that these partners have a presence throughout the country, such as ALDI, in order to guarantee a network from one end to the other of the country.
"The creation of a robust infrastructure of charging points is crucial to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility. Therefore, at EDP, we are very pleased to enter into this long-term partnership with ALDI Portugal, the largest electric mobility partnership ever carried out in the country, to bring consumers the convenience of charging their vehicles while shopping, anywhere in the country", highlights Carlos Moreira, director of EDP Comercial.
"We are very pleased with this partnership with EDP Comercial, which plays a vital role in finding practical and efficient solutions in Portugal. Together, we chart the path to decarbonization, offering our customers an increasingly sustainable in-store experience, while raising awareness and promoting the use of electric vehicles in the country," says João Braz Teixeira, Managing Director Expansion & Real Estate at ALDI Portugal.
These new charging points are in addition to the more than 3,300 that EDP Comercial already has in operation or under implementation in Portugal, in more than 195 municipalities in all districts of the country. With this constant growth in the number of charging points available, the number of charging sessions on EDP's public grid also continues to break records.
Since EDP began investing in the development of electric mobility in Portugal, more than two million charging sessions have already been carried out at the company's charging points connected to the public grid. These charges have made it possible to travel more than 200 million kilometres using electricity alone and have avoided more than 20 thousand tons of CO2 that would have been emitted by combustion vehicles.
