The EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize was created in 2000 and, since then, has been highlighting national plastic artists who contribute to the affirmation of contemporary trends.
Recognizing and encouraging creativity
Created in 2000, the EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize aims to recognize an artist with a consolidated and historically relevant career, whose work contributes to the affirmation and substantiation of Portuguese contemporary aesthetic trends.
This initiative, which is currently considered one of the most important in the field of visual arts in Portugal, appeared in the year in which the EDP Foundation began its contemporary art collection.

Within the scope of this triennial initiative, the following Portuguese contemporary artists have already been distinguished:

- Álvaro Lapa (2004)
- Eduardo Batarda (2007)
- Jorge Molder (2010)
- Ana Jotta (2013)
- Artur Barrio (2016)
- Luísa Cunha (2021)
Throughout the editions, significant relevance has been given to artists less known by the public, but with works worthy of being highlighted, for their density and depth.
In addition to the monetary prize, the winner is awarded a retrospective and/or anthological exhibition and the publication of a catalogue that represents an important historiographical and bibliographical reference.
