Investigação e Desenvolvimento para uma Europa mais forte
EDP is one of the greatest innovators in the energy sector and has consistently recognised the value of research and innovation (R&I) in the company’s strategy as well as its role in society.
Through the last 10 years of European Framework Programmes (Horizon 2020 from 2014 to 2020 and now in the current Horizon Europe), EDP sits in the podium of the R&I ecosystem, participating in more than 80 European projects, with a total European funding of 34M€ to develop groundbreaking solutions, ranging from efficient and resilient energy systems to innovative storage technologies, in collaboration with a wide network of industrial and academic partners across Europe.
At the driver seat for this success is EDPs’ R&I centre – CNET: CENTRE FOR NEW ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES SA. In Horizon 2020, CNET participated in 20 EU projects, coordinated 2, with total funding of 8,7M€. In the first years of Horizon Europe (2021-2024), CNET has secured 8,8M€ in EU projects, accounting for 65% of the EU funding captured by EDP. Outstanding achievements that are a clear result of CNET’s strategic vision, leadership and hard work.
CNET's success transcends the EU funding. Participation in strategic R&I projects has allowed EDP to advance knowledge and introduce innovative solutions into its operations. An example is the project XFLEX – Hydropower Extending Power System Flexibility, where CNET partnered with 18 pioneering organisations to expand the flexibility of hydropower plants. Based on the conclusions of XFLEX, EDP has scaled the solution into their plants, with very interesting impacts. A follow up project has been awarded in 2024 by Horizon Europe – STOR-HY, that will push a new frontier of pumped hydro energy storage concept.
A final word to João Maciel, a source of inspiration and unique sense of responsibility towards the ecosystem for a greener and fairer society. Congratulations for 10 years of success! Looking forward to future greater successes EDP and CNET will undoubtedly achieve.
