The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges of our time and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is proving to be a key enabler in accelerating this transformation. From production planning to consumption optimisation, from renewable integration to predictive maintenance of critical infrastructure, AI plays a decisive role in building more efficient, resilient, and sustainable energy systems.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), applying AI in the energy sector can bring significant impact: improving the predictability of renewable generation, automating smart grid operations, increasing energy efficiency, and supporting real-time decision-making. However, this potential can only be realised through solid research, cross-sector collaboration, and a clear vision for impact.

It is precisely within this context that the collaboration between INESC-ID and EDP stands out - a longstanding partnership that has generated knowledge, innovation, and high-value solutions. The Smart Energy Lab exemplifies how applied research can be transformed into tangible results for the energy system. Through the combination of AI, data science, and engineering, innovative models have been developed for energy management in buildings, smart grids, and demand response.

At INESC-ID, research in AI continues to evolve with ambition, exploring advanced algorithms in optimisation, machine learning, and intelligent systems. Close ties with strategic partners such as EDP and infrastructures like the Smart Energy Lab are essential to ensure that science does not remain confined to the lab but reaches society through real and sustainable solutions.

Building on this strong collaboration and the synergies already created, INESC-ID looks to the future with renewed enthusiasm, confident that its partnership with EDP will remain central in addressing the challenges of the energy transition through innovation, vision, and a shared commitment to a sustainable future.
