The Chiaramonte project reinforces Italy as a core growth market for EDP’s global renewable strategy. The plant, with an installed capacity of 70.5 MWp, will generate approximately 117 GWh of electricity per year.

EDP, a global leader in the development of renewable energy, has commissioned a new utility-scale solar plant in Chiaramonte Gulfi, Sicily, marking a significant milestone in its expansion in Italy, one of the company’s most strategic growth markets worldwide. This project strengthens EDP’s commitment to accelerating the energy transition and consolidates its position as a leading international investor in the Italian renewable sector.

The new photovoltaic park, with an installed capacity of 70.5 MWp (63 MWac), is expected to generate approximately 117 GWh of electricity per year, sufficient production to power over 44,000 households and avoid nearly 44,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. Sicily, with some of Italy’s highest solar irradiation, offers optimal conditions to maximize capacity factors and minimize curtailment risk through advanced plant design and grid integration.

Italy is a cornerstone of EDP’s global growth strategy. The company has a secure pipeline of around 2.5 GW of renewable capacity in the country, confirming its leadership as the largest international investor in Italy’s renewable energy sector.

“The commissioning of our new solar plant in Sicily is more than a local achievement; it is a strategic milestone for EDP globally. Italy is one of our core growth markets, combining strong fundamentals with ambitious climate targets. By investing in large-scale projects like Chiaramonte, we are not only supporting the country’s energy transition but also creating long-term value for communities and reinforcing EDP’s position as a global leader in renewables,” said Roberto Pasqua, Executive Director for Southern and Eastern Europe at EDP Renewables.

Italy’s renewable sector continues to accelerate, with nearly 42 GW of installed PV capacity and 4.8 GW of new solar added between January and October 2025. EDP entered the Italian market in 2010 through EDP Renewables (EDPR), initially focusing on wind power and later diversifying into solar energy. In 2019, EDP also expanded through EDP Energia Italia, delivering distributed energy solutions to corporate clients, with approximately 150 MWp of contracted capacity and over 1,400 installations.

Since 2010, EDP has installed approximately 1 GW of solar and wind capacity in Italy, with total investments exceeding one billion euros, a clear demonstration of the company’s long-term commitment to the Italian market and its role in EDP’s global growth strategy.
