Since 2018, the EDP Foundation has edited the journal Electra, an international publication of contemporary thought and culture that privileges research, essays, criticism and cultural, social and political reflection.
Electra - a magazine to be read and seen
Electra is an international journal of research, essays, criticism and cultural, social and political reflection. Published by the EDP Foundation every quarter since 2018, with two editions in Portuguese and English, its aim is to "anticipate the future, casting a free, creative and attentive gaze on the present". It addresses various fields of knowledge and has the collaboration of Portuguese and foreign authors from different cultural geographies, relevant figures in contemporary thought and culture.
With unpublished and original contents, Electra also gives special value to its visual dimension, highlighting the choice of artists, images, physical supports and graphic design.
Its director is José Manuel dos Santos, administrator and cultural director of the EDP Foundation, and its editor is António Guerreiro, journalist, critic and essayist. This project is part of the wide-ranging cultural activity of EDP Foundation, which is one of the most important patrons of the arts and one of the main agents of cultural production in Portugal
Within the scope of the magazine, several initiatives are held regularly. To mark its launch, the conference "Art in the Internet Age" was held in March 2018, with philosopher Boris Groys. In 2021, at Central Tejo, the "Current situation of contemporary art: profusion and disorientation" was debated, with the presence of philosopher and art critic Yves Michaud.
In 2023, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova organized a debate on the theme of the winter edition, "The state of democracy".
Among other initiatives, Electra was media partner of the Portuguese Official Representation at the 59th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2022; it was present at the Lisbon Book Fair; the Madrid Book Fair; the 26th edition of the São Paulo International Book Biennial; the International Printmaking and Art on Paper Fair (FIG Bilbao); the Leipzig International Book Fair and the Paraty International Literary Festival.
In 2019, it won the Best Editorial Design and Magazine Graphic Project Award, as part of the Design Meios & Publicidade Awards, which annually distinguish the best design works.
In 2023, with its 20th edition, Electra marks its 5th anniversary. In its editorial, it assumes the conquest of its own place in the vast national and global universe of magazines. In this regard, it is possible to find Electra on sale today in an airport in Edinburgh, a newsstand in São Paulo, a train station in Berlin, a newsstand in Rome or a bookstore in New York.
