EDP will supply renewable energy to Carrefour Poland through a PPA
EDP, a global leader in the development of renewable energy and in providing clients with long-term sustainable energy supply, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Carrefour Poland. Under this agreement, Carrefour will power its operations in Poland with clean electricity, sourced from two renewable projects operated by EDP Renewables.
EDP has developed over 1 GW of renewable projects in Poland and has a soundtrack record in establishing long-term energy supply agreements in the country. This partnership is a milestone for the company as it is the first time EDP secures a corporate PPA in this market combining two different renewable technologies - solar and wind - under the same agreement. This strategy allows greater flexibility and ability to provide clients with the right size and technologies for their own specific needs.
EDP began cooperating with Carrefour Poland in 2024, signing an agreement for the construction of 13 photovoltaic installations with a capacity of 650 kWp on the roofs of supermarkets located in five provinces. The recently signed PPA for the contract assets will provide the grid with an additional 50 GWh of clean electricity per year, preventing more than 54,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
For EDP, partnering with leading companies like Carrefour reinforces its role as a key partner that addresses clients’ different needs, such as the rising electricity demand and companies’ evolving needs. For an energy producer, these agreements are also key to drive the construction of additional clean capacity across the markets where EDP is in.
In line with the Carrefour Group's long-term objective, the network aims to drastically reduce electricity consumption in all its stores worldwide. The company is committed to reducing its consumption by 20% by 2026. In the Polish market, the network has reached its energy reduction target well ahead of schedule, achieving a 37.03% decrease in energy consumption in November 2025 compared to 2019.
By choosing PPA contracts, companies mitigate exposure to volatile energy markets and uncertainty but also make tangible progress toward their decarbonization objectives. Such initiatives are essential for reducing corporate carbon footprints and promoting a low-carbon economy. In 2024, EDP surpassed the milestone of 15 GW of contracted capacity in PPA worldwide, which represents a renewable generation of approximately 41.5 TWh. From this contracted capacity, 2.2 GW is allocated in Europe.
EDP began operations in Poland in 2007 through EDP Renewables, which builds and develops utility-scale projects, later expanding its activities in 2020 with EDP Energia Polska, focused on installing distributed solar projects for corporate clients. Today, EDP Renewables has more than 0.6 GW of installed capacity in the country, while EDP Energia Polska has contracted nearly 270 MWp of clean energy, reinforcing EDP’s commitment to supporting Poland’s energy transition through a multi-technology approach.
