What is Skills: Energy Professionals?

Since 2021, EDP has been promoting the SKILLS Energy Professionals program in Spain, an initiative that began under the name Keep it Local with a clear objective: to improve the employability of young people in the energy sector and generate professional opportunities in areas where renewable energy projects are being developed.

The program responds to the growing demand for qualified professionals in renewable energy and, at the same time, contributes to keeping the population in rural areas, focusing on local talent as the driving force behind a fair and inclusive energy transition.

Program objective

The program aims to train new wind farm operation and maintenance technicians through an accredited technical course offered free of charge to young people living in municipalities at risk of depopulation, with greater difficulties in accessing employment and where EDP operates or develops wind farms.

In this way, the programme connects training, employment and territory, enabling participants to develop their professional careers close to their place of origin, contributing to local economic development and putting down roots in their communities.

If you live in a municipality in Spain where EDP has wind farms in operation or is developing new renewable projects, this could be your opportunity:

Technical Course in Wind Farm Operation and Maintenance. Register here (Form available in Spanish only)

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS: Applications will be accepted until Monday, 13 April 2026, at 3:00 p.m.

Specialized technical training

The course, delivered by the AEE - Asociación Empresarial Eólica (Spanish Wind Energy Association) with the support of Vestas, combines theory and practice in a 180-hour hybrid format:

  • Online theory: flexible and accessible learning
  • On-site practical training at the VESTAS facilities in Spain
  • Basic certification in occupational health and safety (AEE)
  • BST GWO certification (Global Wind Organization) working at heights, confined spaces and first aid

This training enables participants to acquire highly sought-after technical skills, directly improving their employability in the wind energy sector.

EDP's territorial presence: Priority provinces and municipalities

EDP’s territorial presence in Spain, in the current edition of the Wind Farm Operation and Maintenance Technician course, is structured around a number of priority provinces, based on the company’s footprint and level of activity. These provinces are located in Andalusia (Cádiz, Huelva and Málaga), Aragon (Huesca, Zaragoza and Teruel), the Principality of Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla‑La Mancha (Albacete, Cuenca and Toledo), Castile and León (Burgos), Catalonia (Barcelona), the Community of Madrid, Galicia (A Coruña) and the Chartered Community of Navarre.

The specific priority municipalities within each province are identified individually in the Annex to the Program’s Terms & Conditions. If your municipality is not explicitly listed or if you have any questions regarding its priority status, you may submit an enquiry via stakeholders.iberia@edp.com

Results that speak for themselves

Wind energy is currently the main source of energy in Spain, and the demand for qualified professionals continues to grow.
The results of the programme reflect its real impact on employment:

  • 1 in 3 students found a job within the first 6 months
  • 50% employability one year after completing the course

These figures confirm the value of the programme as a gateway to the energy sector, especially for young people from rural areas.

A scalable model with global impact

Following its success in Spain, the program has been replicated in Brazil, Italy and Portugal, demonstrating its ability to generate positive impact in different contexts through:

  • Local development
  • Generation of knowledge and technical skills
  • Local economic growth
  • Promotion of a Just Energy Transition

By offering professional opportunities linked to the territory, the programme helps participants become active agents of economic and social development, promoting sustainable growth and population retention in rural communities.
