Access to energy
Green Education: education, social investment and community engagement in EDP’s municipalities in Spain
For over fifteen years, EDP has been committed to education as a key driver of local development through the Green Education programme, a social investment initiative launched in the 2010–2011 academic year with the aim of supporting the academic education of young people living in municipalities linked to the company’s energy activities.
Since its launch, Green Education has awarded financial grants to students at various stages of their education, from pre-school and primary school through to vocational training and university, prioritising academic merit and the socio-economic situation of families. In this way, the programme helps to reduce real financial barriers that can hinder educational continuity and academic progress, particularly in local areas where projects linked to the energy transition are being developed.
Throughout its history, Green Education has been rolled out across numerous municipalities in various autonomous communities, combining direct funding from EDP with close collaboration with local councils, which act as local representatives to ensure transparent, equitable management tailored to the needs of each region. Thanks to this model, the programme has already benefited more than 1,000 students in Spain, establishing itself as a best practice in social commitment linked to the development of renewable energy.
2025 Edition: educational support in three key regions
In its most recent edition, for 2025, Green Education has been rolled out in the municipalities of Medina Sidonia (Cádiz), Merindad de Río Ubierna (Burgos) and Castejón (Navarra), three areas representative of the diverse geographical landscape across which EDP is driving energy projects in Spain.
In these municipalities, the programme has once again demonstrated EDP’s commitment to the host communities, translating the presence of energy projects into tangible social benefits for families through grants aimed at covering educational expenses such as school supplies, transport, tuition fees and technological resources. The initiative thus strengthens the link between the energy transition and social cohesion, placing people and equal opportunities at the heart of sustainable development.

A well-established programme designed to be long-term
The programme’s continuity since 2010, its ability to adapt to different local contexts and its regular roll-out in municipalities across various autonomous communities attest to the strength of Green Education as a core EDP programme. This accumulated experience has also enabled the initiative to be scaled up to other regions, including its first international edition in Portugal in 2025 (municipality of Aljezur).
With Green Education, EDP reaffirms its commitment to a just and inclusive energy transition, which not only drives decarbonisation but also actively contributes to educational progress, social equity and the long-term development of the regions in which it operates.
