“When we surf, we choose the Earth”

an EDP initiative that reinforces the company’s social and environmental commitment

San Lorenzo Beach became the stage today for an unforgettable experience for 24 children and young people from the Castiello de Bernueces Special Education School, who took part in the EDP Surf Open Sessions — an initiative that combines sport, inclusion, and sustainability.

From early in the morning, participants started with a warm-up session and a basic surf lesson, guided by professional instructors from Skool Surf and EDP volunteers. Later, they eagerly took to the water to put what they’d learned into practice. Many managed to stand up on their boards — an achievement they celebrated with joy and that, as they said excitedly, “they’ll never forget.”

The activity is part of the “When we surf, we choose the Earth” program, through which EDP reinforces its commitment to healthy living, environmental respect, and equal opportunities.
According to Bárbara Iglesias, head teacher at Castiello de Bernueces Special Education School, “it was an enriching experience that allowed our students to enjoy the sea and sport in a safe and inclusive environment. Seeing their happiness has been truly moving.”

Meanwhile, EDP’s Brand Manager in Spain highlighted that “initiatives like this reflect EDP’s purpose of building a more inclusive and sustainable future. Surfing is a powerful tool to promote values such as teamwork, personal growth, and environmental care.”

The event is part of the EDP Surf Pro Spain League, which tours coastal towns across Asturias, Cantabria, and Andalusia — making a special stop in Gijón today with an inclusive activity that left a lasting mark on everyone involved.
