This initiative, carried out with young people from the Down Syndrome Foundation of Cantabria, is part of the program ‘When we surf, we choose the Earth’

A new edition of the EDP Surf Open Sessions was held on Somo beach, as part of the surf festival organised by the Cantabrian Surf School and sponsored by the energy company. The aim of this sports activity is to promote surfing as a fun and inclusive tool that encourages sport, inclusion and a healthy lifestyle.

On this occasion, seven young people from the Down Syndrome Foundation of Cantabria took part in the activity, enjoying a unique experience in contact with the sea. They were accompanied by specialist instructors and ten EDP volunteers. These young people enjoyed a surfing experience they will never forget, as they enthusiastically pointed out throughout the activity. They began the day at Somo Beach with a warm-up and a surfing lesson. Then they went into the water to try out what they had learnt. Many of them managed to stand up on their boards, which thrilled them greatly.

Elisa Irureta, president of the Down Syndrome Foundation of Cantabria, said, "We will always be grateful to organisations such as EDP for inviting us to enjoy inclusive sports and for giving us the opportunity to continue discovering our abilities. Our boys and girls are always willing to learn and enjoy sports."

The EDP Surf Open Sessions are part of the initiatives that EDP has been promoting since 2021 to bring surfing closer to young people with different abilities, promoting values such as equal opportunities, respect for the environment and physical and emotional well-being.
