EDP summer course at UIMP opens with an analysis of energy’s role as a driver of competitiveness and social and economic development
EDP’s summer course at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), “Energy in an Uncertain World: Networks and Industry Facing Global Challenges”, has opened at the Magdalena Palace in Santander with a reflection on the strategic role of energy in economic competitiveness and social and industrial development.
The opening session was attended by Eduardo Arasti, Regional Minister for Industry, Employment, Innovation and Trade of the Government of Cantabria; Gema Igual, Mayor of Santander; Ángel Pelayo González-Torre, Rector of UIMP; and Francisco Rodríguez, CEO of EDP Networks Spain. All highlighted the importance of having a strong, secure energy system capable of responding to the economic and social challenges of both today and the future.
During the first day, participants analysed the key uncertainties transforming the energy sector. Experts from a range of fields addressed issues related to geopolitics, energy security, climate change, regulation and market developments.
Speakers included Nuno Eça, Policy Officer at the European Commission; Pablo de Juan, Operations Director at WPC Energy; Josep Salas, Board Member of CNMC and ACER; Ana Padilla, Secretary of the Spanish Committee of the World Energy Council; Mar Hidalgo, Senior Analyst at the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE); José Antonio Márquez, Global Head of Security Risks & Resilience at Naturgy; Sergio Martínez, Adviser at WindEurope; Juan de Dios, Technical Director of the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE); and José Luis Pérez, Director of the National Centre for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure (CNPIC).
The day also featured a presentation by Pedro Neves, CEO of EDP’s Global Energy Management business, who analysed developments in energy markets and the main factors currently shaping the sector in an international environment marked by volatility and uncertainty.
The course continues this Thursday with a session focused on industrial competitiveness and the role of energy as a driver of economic growth. Duarte Bello, CEO of EDP Spain, will take part in the discussion.
Organised by EDP in collaboration with UIMP, the course aims to promote a balanced and rigorous analysis of today’s energy challenges and contribute to dialogue between the public and private sectors at a decisive moment for the transformation of the energy system.
