EDP opens applications for the A2E Fund to support projects in Africa and Brazil with one million euros
EDP has opened applications for the seventh edition of the Access to Energy (A2E) Fund, aimed at supporting projects that promote energy inclusion in underserved communities across Africa and, for the first time, Brazil. Applications are open until May 5, and organizations from any country can apply with initiatives to be developed in these regions.
Through the A2E Fund, EDP will select and finance sustainable projects that promote the use of renewable energy in four African countries (Mozambique, Kenya, Malawi, and Nigeria) and in Brazil. The goal is to support the social, environmental, and economic development of rural communities in these areas, where high levels of energy exclusion and dependence on fossil fuels still persist.
In total, EDP will allocate one million euros to projects that support key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, water, and other productive uses of energy, with the aim of promoting a just and inclusive transition in regions where electrification levels remain very low or nearly nonexistent.
Interested organizations can submit their applications until May 5. This will be followed by an evaluation and pre-selection phase. The winning projects will be announced in the last quarter of this year.
EDP aims to support sustainable energy solutions that contribute to a fair and inclusive transition in the most remote and vulnerable communities. Since its launch in 2018, the A2E Fund has received more than 900 applications and funded 47 projects in seven African countries, with total support amounting to 4.5 million euros, directly and indirectly improving the lives of over 8 million people. Through this initiative, EDP strengthens its social impact strategy and global commitment to a just energy transition, particularly in developing economies.
In the most recent edition, selected projects—from a total of 195 applications—focused on areas such as decentralized solar energy technologies. These initiatives primarily aim to improve healthcare services, support educational institutions, promote community development, and provide access to clean drinking water. With the A2E Fund’s support, these initiatives will be able to deliver their services using safe, renewable, and affordable energy.
All projects selected in the past six editions of the fund can be found in the Access to Energy section on the EDP website.
Supporting access to clean energy projects has been a priority for EDP as part of its global social impact strategy, EDP Y.E.S. The program guidelines and application form are available here.
