EDP starts operation of its first distributed solar generation project in Germany

EDP, a global leader in renewable energy and a European leader in distributed solar generation for companies, has begun operating its first decentralized solar project in Germany. This marks a significant step for the company in the German market, reinforcing its commitment to advancing the energy transition through solar -both installed at its clients’ sites and utility-scale-, wind, and storage projects throughout the decade.

Through this deal, EDP is deploying close to 3 MWp of solar capacity across six Decathlon sites located in Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein), Berlin (Berlin), Cologne (North Rhine-Westphalia), Schwetzingen (Baden-Württemberg), Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Palatinate), Plochingen (Baden-Württemberg).

Together, these PV systems will generate close to 3 GWh of clean electricity each year, enough to power core daily operations across the six Decathlon facilities. By producing energy onsite, these systems reduce grid dependency, enhance operational energy autonomy, improve cost efficiency through competitive energy sourcing, and contribute to a more sustainable energy model for the company’s activities.

This first decentralized project in Germany marks a key step in EDP’s expansion across core European markets. This project reflects how on-site solar is moving beyond sustainability goals to become a strategic energy asset, improving energy autonomy and ensuring greater control over long-term energy costs. Our partnership with Decathlon reflects the growing demand for smarter, decentralized energy solutions from leading commercial players, particularly in a country where solar alone contributed nearly 11% of the national mix in the first half of 2025.

This project is part of a multi-geography agreement signed in 2023 between EDP and Decathlon, a global multi-specialist sports brand. Through this partnership, EDP has installed up to 12 MWp of rooftop solar capacity across Decathlon facilities in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and France. The ability to implement a unified solar strategy across several countries with the same partner highlights EDP’s reliability and strength as a long-term energy partner for international businesses operating in multiple markets. This streamlined approach also enables Decathlon to accelerate progress toward its sustainability goals

In 2025, EDP inaugurated its first utility-scale solar project in the country and secured land in Lower Saxony to develop its first wind project. In parallel, the company is advancing its solar expansion, with over 2 GWp of solar capacity under development across the country in both utility-scale and distributed generation projects.

EDP is also aligning with Germany’s localized strategy to deploy decentralized generation where grid demand is high. Future phases include integrating co-located storage across Europe, enhancing flexibility, reducing grid stress, and empowering consumers toward self-sufficiency. Since launching its decentralized solar operations in Europe, EDP has expanded over the past five years its annual capacity additions more than tenfold, reaching 100 MWp of additions in 2025 alone, reflecting both increasing market demand and the company’s accelerating growth.
