Business Advisory Committee (WS)

The Hon Warwick L Smith AO is a distinguished Australian business leader and former Federal Government Minister with deep experience across finance, media, energy, and government.

Mr. Smith is a non-executive and lead independent director of Jemena Energy and Chairman of Jemena Northern Gas Pipeline Pty Ltd. 

Mr. Smith is also Chairman of the Advisory Board of Australian Capital Equity, holder of interests in SGH Ltd (of which he is a Board Director), Seven West Media Limited, Boral, Coates Hire, Beach Energy, WesTrac and Caterpillar industrial services and equipment in Western Australia and New South Wales. He is also the Chairman of Ord Minnett, Wollar Solar and the Australia-China Energy Transition Dialogue.  Formerly, he was the Commonwealth Nominee on the Board of Marinus Link Pty Ltd. 

With the Business Council of Australia, Mr. Smith is an Honorary Lifetime Member and immediate past Chairman of the Global Engagement Committee. He is the inaugural business representative for BOAO Forum for Asia and a Committee Member, BOAO Forum for the Asia Expert Committee on Financial Cooperation. He has served as Chairman of the Australia–China Council for over 8 years and was the inaugural Chair of the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations. In addition, he was a Global Trustee of the Asia Society, headquartered in New York and is currently Chairman Emeritus of the Asia Society in Australia. 

He was the Chair of a Feasibility Study of Second Interconnector to focus on improving Energy Security and maximising Tasmania’s Renewable Energy Resources.

Mr. Smith has more than 20 years of experience in banking and financial services, having held senior roles as an Executive Director with the Macquarie Bank Group as well as Chairman New South Wales and Australia Capital Territory and former Senior Managing Director for ANZ Banking Group Limited which included Chairman of ANZ Bank China and Chairman of ANZ Bank Thailand. He has previously been Chairman of E*TRADE Limited; Board Director of Estia Health Ltd and Chairman of the Australian Sports Commission. He was also Chairman of the National Museum of Australia, the Australia-China Council and the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.

Mr. Smith was an Australian Federal Government Minister with a parliamentary career spanning 15 years. He was Australia’s first Telecommunication Ombudsman and has received a Centenary Medal and has twice been awarded an Order of Australia.
