EDP partners with Fiocruz to supply renewable energy
EDP, a company that operates in all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, has signed a contract with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) to supply renewable energy through the open energy market, on a retail basis, to the Eusébio campus in Ceará. The partnership calls for the supply of an average of 1.30 MWm, totaling 32,340.00 MWh, between 2026 and 2028. The supply began in January, and the partnership is expected to generate savings of approximately 18% for the health and research institution (according to the Foundation’s own public notice)
The Fiocruz Ceará complex, located in the Precabura neighborhood of Eusébio, includes the management and teaching building, the laboratory building, the auditorium, the administrative building, and the COVID-19 Diagnostic Support Unit. Fiocruz Ceará is Brazil’s first science park to integrate technological innovation projects in the production of medicines, medical supplies, and diagnostics to address everything from primary care to highly complex medical procedures.
The contract also includes the issuance of a renewable energy certificate (I-REC) for each year of service, which guarantees the energy’s origin, with the expectation of preventing the emission of approximately 1,490 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) over a three-year period.
