EV users traveled more than 5 million kilometers with energy from the EDP network
Electric mobility growth in the Iberian Peninsula drives record figures in the number of charges on the EDP charging network. Despite the pandemic, 76,000 EV charges were made during the first half of the year on the company's network in Portugal and Spain.
During the first six months of the year, and despite the pandemic lockdown, 60,000 electrical vehicle charges were made on Portugal's EDP network – four times more compared to the same period in 2020. Overall, these EV charges amounted to 750.000 kWh – four times more than in the first half of 2020.
Thanks to the growing commitment of Portuguese drivers to electric mobility, more than 500 tonnes of CO2 were avoided in Portugal between January and June, and nearly 5 million kilometers were traveled on electricity alone – roughly the same distance as 125 trips around planet Earth.
As EDP's charging network continues to grow, the company has recently reached the goal of having more than 1,000 charging points in prime locations across the country, thanks to decisive partnerships with restaurant chains, parking areas, and commercial spaces.
This commitment to the growth of electric mobility and the public charging network cuts across the various markets where the company operates and is particularly visible in Spain. 16,000 EV charges were made until June in more than 270 EDP service stations across Spain, amounting to more than 200.000 kWh.
As the number of electric vehicles in the Iberian Peninsula grows, more and more tonnes of CO2 emissions are avoided – which is a crucial step in the fight against climate change. Throughout the first six months of the year, EDP's network users in the Iberian Peninsula avoided the emission of more than 630 tonnes of CO2 by traveling over 6.4 million kilometers on electricity alone.
In Brazil, where the company has 65 charging points – most of them along Latin America's largest electric mobility corridor, which connects Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo – 24 tonnes of CO2 were avoided, thanks to EV charges that allowed users to travel more than 240,000 kilometers on electricity alone – i.e. without using any fossil fuels.
EDP wants to remain at the forefront of electric mobility in Portugal and continue to grow its operations in Spain and Brazil, with the goal of reaching 40,000 public and private charging solutions in the three countries by 2025. Strategic partnerships for network expansion and capillarity are key elements for this growth and for an active involvement in the energy transition process.
