EDP, a company that operates in all business areas of the Brazilian electricity sector, has completed, 42 months ahead of the regulatory deadline, the 230 kV transmission line connecting Piauí to Maranhão. The section is part of Lot 13, awarded to the company in Auction 01/2024, held by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), and was energized and integrated into the National Interconnected System (SIN) last Sunday, the 14th.

Lot 13 consists of two transmission lines totaling 461 kilometers. The 500 kV line has an extent of 366 kilometers and connects Ribeiro Gonçalves (PI) to Colinas (TO), while the 230 kV line connects Ribeiro Gonçalves (PI) to Balsas (MA), with an extent of 95 kilometers. The new project is expected to enhance the transmission of energy currently generated in the Northeast Region, as well as create room for the connection of new plants, meeting the growth in local demand and contributing to the development of the region. The total investment estimated by Aneel for Lot 13 is R$ 981 million, with an Annual Permitted Revenue (RAP) of approximately R$ 102 million.

“Delivering this section 42 months ahead of schedule reinforces EDP's ability to execute transmission projects within challenging deadlines - and continues our recent track record, like the completion of Lot 2 in the Northern Region, delivered 40 months ahead of schedule. In the case of this section of Lot 13, we had around 18 months between the signing of the concession contract and the start of commercial operation, the result of rigorous planning and consistent execution. In addition to anticipating RAP and creating value for EDP, this project strengthens the infrastructure in the region, opens up possibilities for new connections, and contributes to the safety of SIN,” emphasizes Daniel Sarmento, Transmission Director for EDP in South America.

The other two lots, which also pass through Piauí and were awarded to EDP in Auction 01/2024, are under construction. Lot 2, located entirely within the state, has two transmission lines and some interconnection sections, totaling 537 kilometers, and a 500 kV substation. Lot 7 crosses the states of Bahia, Piauí, and Tocantins, with two transmission lines totaling 390 kilometers, and a 230/138 kV substation.

Transmission Operations in Brazil

Investments in transmission are among EDP's strategic priorities in Brazil, alongside renewable energy and distribution. Since 2017, the company has already invested more than R$ 7 billion in transmission works and projects in ten Brazilian states: Goiás, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Maranhão, Espírito Santo, Acre, Rondônia, and now, Piauí. Currently, it has 1,485 kilometers of lines in operation in its portfolio. In 2025, it secured Lot 5 in Auction 4/2025, comprised of 285 kilometers of lines and a substation in Goiás, as well as Lot A in the CelgPar auction, consisting of 152 kilometers of transmission lines, also in Goiás.
