EDP begins operations at its first storage complex in South America
Located at the Punta de Talca Wind Farm in Chile, the project received an investment of US$44 million and has an installed capacity of 240 MWh.
EDP, a company with global operations across all segments of the electricity sector, has commenced operations of the Punta de Talca BESS project, located in the municipality of Ovalle, Chile, marking its first battery storage complex in South America. With an installed capacity of 240 MWh and an average annual storage capacity of 60 GWh, the project will increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s power matrix and has the potential to supply electricity to more than 30,000 households in the region.
Approximately US$44 million was invested in integrating the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with the Punta de Talca Wind Farm, which has an installed capacity of 83 MW and has been in operation since 2024. The initiative reinforces EDP’s commitment to leading the energy transition in the regions where it operates and to developing innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency and flexibility of renewable energy sources.
The battery storage complex was designed to reduce curtailment at the wind farm by enabling energy generated during periods of lower demand to be stored and dispatched during peak demand hours. In addition to optimizing revenues from the hybrid facility, the batteries play a strategic role in the Chilean power system by providing firm capacity and helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels, further reinforcing EDP’s commitment to the energy transition.
“The beginning of operations at our first battery storage project in South America represents a strategic milestone for EDP and highlights the role of energy storage in building more resilient, flexible, and sustainable power systems. “This facility in Chile demonstrates how integrating renewable energy production with battery storage can improve operational efficiency, reduce energy waste, and support the region’s energy transition”, said João Brito Martins, CEO of EDP in South America.
With nearly three decades of operations in South America, EDP has established Brazil as its primary market and strategic platform for regional growth. With a presence in almost every Brazilian state, the company operates across the entire electricity value chain, including power generation, transmission, distribution, and energy trading, while also offering innovative solutions focused on decarbonization and the energy transition.
