In Brazil, revitalizing the Cultural Heritage of Espírito Santo.
EDP Foundation supports the restoration and readjustment of the Carlos Gomes Theater, in Vitória (Espírito Santo, Brazil), a space with 94 years worth of history, closed since 2017, significantly promoting the revitalization of the Cultural Heritage of Espírito Santo.
Recovering the stage of tomorrow
With the objective of supporting the revitalization and appreciation of the historic and cultural heritage, the EDP Foundation backs the project for the recuperation and restoration of Carlos Gomes Theater, the oldest theater in Espírito Santo (state of the southeast region in Brazil), closed since December 2017, giving back to the population their most important stage.
Projected by the Italian architect André Carloni, inspired by the Alla Scala Theater, in Milan, the Carlos Gomes Theater opened for the first time on February 5th of 1927, built to replace the Melpômene Theater, which had been demolished after a fire.
In 1929, with the coffee crisis, the theater was rented to a company and started to function as a cinema. Not long after it was acquired by the State Government, which started to run the space. It shut its doors in December 2017.
The recuperation and restoration project, by the responsibility of the Modus Vivendis Institute, foresees the architectural and ornamental elements, the acoustic, the climate, the modernization of hydraulic and electrical systems, and the installation of safety equipment for firefight and prevention. The installation will also receive new dressing rooms, clothing, administration rooms, a kitchen, and accessible bathrooms, with ramps and platforms to access every floor in the building.
The work was quoted in 20 million reais, of which 10 million (around 1.9 million euros) are an EDP investment, made through the Federal Law of the Cultural Incentive. The remaining 10 million reais, are in charge of the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (National Bank for the Economic and Social Development).
The recovery of the Carlos Gomes Theater will benefit, primarily, the population in Espirito Santo, Brazil. The project intends in this way, to promote the appreciation and revitalization of the cultural and historic heritage.
This initiative is part of the Recovering History Program, by the BNDES, of which EDP is a founding partner. For over 20 years in Brazil, EDP is today, one of the largest private companies in the energy sector operating in the country in all of the value chains.
