COP28: A shared vision for a greener planet

COP28 marked a pivotal moment in addressing climate change, as nations committed to supporting vulnerable communities and transitioning away from all fossil fuels. Our active advocacy for tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainability, showcased through cutting-edge projects worldwide. We championed the Fossil to Clean campaign to phase out all fossil fuels and co-founded the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA) to achieve net zero by 2050. Together, we can meet the 1.5°C limit and power a climate-resilient future. These goals are not mere aspirations but tangible roadmaps to a greener future we're building together.

Even though we are witnessing a surge in the adoption of renewable energy sources, it is evident that we will surpass the 1.5°C threshold unless everyone delivers an even stronger commitment towards achieving net-zero emissions. Energy transition needs to be accelerated even more.”

Renewable Energy

Creating a greener future

We are committed to decarbonisation and the energy transition driven by the belief that renewable energy is the key to a greener and more sustainable future. We choose Earth and we are dedicated to empowering communities around the world.

A new source of clean energy

A new source of clean energy

In the Arizona desert (USA), a community is finding a new source of clean energy. Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) is collaborating with us, through EDP Renewables North America, to establish an innovative solar power and storage infrastructure, which is providing electricity to its 36,700 members.

A green island in Singapore

Pulau Ubin, a small island off the coast of Singapore, is embarking on a sustainable initiative that serves as a model for others. We are creating a green microgrid for this transformation: a project from EDP Renewables APAC that will supply 90% renewable energy to the island while reducing the use of diesel by around 100,000 litres annually.

As active participants in COP28, we look forward to participating in relevant debates on the ground - with business leaders, policymakers and the climate community - regarding what is needed to move the energy transition forward.”

EDP ON THE ROAD TO COP 28

Because We choose Earth we attended COP28 with an engaged and specialized delegation. Here are some thoughts and expectations our delegates left us anticipating the conference.

It is essential to meet the promised targets

"At EDP, we will continue to join forces with companies, governments, and communities, and we will continue to invest in our energy grids, side by side with our customers, aiming to be all green by 2030 and net zero by 2040."

Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, CEO

To change tomorrow, we must act today

"EDP calls on governments and other stakeholders to commit to tripling renewable energy and phasing out fossil fuels. This is what we also intend to bring to COP28, in addition to strenghtening relations with the Spanish government on climate strategy."

Maria Yolanda Montes, Director of Environment, Sustainability, Innovation and Climate Change

We choose Earth, together

"We’re looking to establish innovation-driven partnerships with start-ups and large corporates that want to be leaders in the energy transition and build a sustainable future."

Luís Manuel, Board Member at EDP Innovation

Key topics

  • Global Stocktake: The first-ever report card on our climate progress (appropriately named the Global Stocktake) showed exactly how far behind we are in our climate ambitions. COP28 will conduct a global review of progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.
  • Accelerating the energy transition: COP28 will focus on accelerating the shift to renewable energy sources and phasing out fossil fuels.
  • Transforming climate finance: Parties will explore ways to improve the delivery of climate finance to developing countries.
  • Addressing loss and damage: The conference will explore ways to provide financial assistance and support to countries struggling with the effects of climate change.

Conclusions of COP28

  • Triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 to a minimum of 11,000 GW.
  • Double energy efficiency.
  • Transition away from all fossil fuels (including oil and gas, not just coal) in the energy sector.
  • Support the Global Renewables Alliance and the #3xRenewables campaign.
  • Support the "Fossil to Clean" campaign.
  • Found the Alliance for a Net Zero Future by 2050.
  • Abandon coal by 2025.
  • Become 100% renewable by 2030 (85% of the energy it produces already is, compared to 20% about 2 decades ago).
  • Become net zero by 2040.
