Time without Time by Carolina Piteira at Central Tejo
Time Without Time/Out of Time is the title of Carolina Piteira's exhibition, which will be open to the public at Central Tejo in Lisbon from January 12 to 31, 2022.
The 22-piece exhibition is dedicated to wind energy, solar energy and water power and how these forms of energy intersect with time.
The artist created these works in response to EDP’s invitation to design works of art reflecting the challenge of climate change and the importance of the company's response to the climate crisis. Time Without Time - A Changing Tomorrow Now exhibition by EDP is part of the company's recent decision to adopt a strategy of being a 100% green power company by the end of this decade, producing energy exclusively from renewable sources - wind, water and the sun.
These are the elements that inspired the latest creations by Carolina Piteira, who used a variety of techniques and materials in her works. Among them is a kite belonging to Francisco Lufinha, a Portuguese mariner who has just completed a solo voyage from Portugal to the Caribbean in a boat powered only by renewable energy, thereby successfully completing the EDP Atlantic Mission.
Carolina Piteira has always been concerned about climate change, but being pregnant with her daughter Maria Teresa while working on these creations brought it home to her. "We are running out of time to act, for us, for our children, and for future generations. I therefore hope that this exhibition will raise awareness of the climate crisis and, if possible, contribute to a positive change in behavior,'' says the artist.
Carolina Piteira started her degree course in painting at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal in 2008. As part of her BA, she joined the Erasmus Exchange Program at the University of East London, where she graduated with distinction. She also received the Limehouse Arts Foundation Studio Award and was voted student of the year.
In 2014, the Portuguese Ministry of the Economy appointed her “I Am Portugal” program Ambassador, to represent and boost the Portuguese market as an emerging artist abroad.
Changing tomorrow now
In May 2021, Carolina Piteira was the narrator of EDP's new brand positioning, Changing Tomorrow Now, which embodied the company's ambitious strategy.
Since completing her studies, Carolina Piteira has won several awards, including the Signature Art Award, which recognizes emerging artists. She has held several joint and solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Madrid and Lisbon, including one at the Venice Bienniale 2019.
In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, Carolina Piteira organized a joint art auction to raise money for hospital materials for the National Health Service. She raised 8,000 euros for Portuguese hospitals.
