Francisco Lufinha is already on his way to the Caribbean
Francisco Lufinha, the holder of three kitesurfing world records, has already started the 6,700-kilometer passage towards the Caribbean. The navigator will do the trip solo, in a boat guided with a kite and powered by the wind, in a crossing of about 6,700 kilometers.
The departure was this morning, from the Cascais Marine, towards the Caribbean, on an oceanic voyage that is expected to last between 4 to 6 weeks. Favorable weather conditions advanced by the Hydrographic Institute – with north winds that allow pushing the navigator towards the south – dictated the departure of the EDP Atlantic Mission.
Moments before leaving, Francisco Lufinha spoke to the press and appeared confident: “A windy window appeared that made us anticipate the start for this crossing,
which is without a doubt the boldest of my life. I'm looking forward to being in the middle of the sea and taking this mission to fruition, but it's going to be a very demanding trip
on a physical and psychological level.”
For Catarina Barradas, EDP brand director, “it is very exciting to see the day when we start the EDP Atlantic Mission, a mission that has been
prepared with dedication and it demonstrates Francisco's perseverance and mission spirit. We challenge the Portuguese to follow the project up-to-the-minute on the EDP website, as well as on EDP and Francisco social networks so that our good energies can help him reach the Caribbean speedily.”
More than 3200 people have already contributed to give energy to the EDP Atlantic Mission, by inscribing their name on the boat in which Francisco Lufinha is already doing this
mission. The trip and the kiteboat have the High Sponsorship of His Excellency, the President of the Republic.
EDP Atlantic Mission is one of the four projects that materialize EDP's ambition of becoming 100% green already in 2030, producing energy only from water,
sun, and wind. This commitment, to change tomorrow, today, bears the EDP Changing Tomorrow Now signature.
It should be recalled that from 2013 to 2017 Lufinha covered a total of 3,372 kilometers in kitesurfing in the four extreme challenges he carried out connecting the national territory by Sea,
This Mission alone involves the navigation of about 6,700 kilometers, almost double the total traveled to date.
