EDP Renováveis sells energy to Microsoft in the US

Thursday 07, March 2019

The companies have signed power purchase agreements involving clean energy to be produced in the state of Ohio.

EDP Renováveis, through its subsidiary EDP Renewables North America, has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Microsoft Corp. The 15-year agreements will sell energy produced by Timber Road IV wind farm in Ohio's Paulding County.

This wind farm will have a capacity of 125MW, enough to power 36,000 homes every year. The wind farm is expected to be operational in 2019 and will create employment opportunities and economic benefits for local communities, namely through land lease payments to the owners of the plots where this clean energy farm will be built.

Once in operation, Timber Road IV will be EDP Renováveis' fourth wind farm in Ohio, and the third in Paulding County. Together, the four wind farms' capacity will reach 392MW and account for more than 40% of the state's installed wind capacity.

These PPAs are included in a new wind farm package announced by EDP Renováveis on July 24, 2018. Such agreements are a clear example of the company's ability to work directly with institutional clients, helping them achieve their renewable energy targets and reduce their carbon emissions. Other examples of this strategy are the PPAs signed in 2018 with Facebook, Wallmart, and Salesforce, among others.

EDP Renováveis operates in 15 US states and has recently announced its entry into Colorado with a 104MW wind farm.
