EDP inaugurates in Brazil the group's largest solar complex
EDP Renováveis project, located in the State of São Paulo, has a 252 MWdc installed capacity and allowed for the creation of 1500 jobs. The inauguration held today was attended by the group's executive president, Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade.
Today, EDP inaugurated its largest solar park in Brazil. With an installed capacity of 252 MWdc, the EDP Renováveis complex, a subsidiary of the group and the fourth-largest producer of clean energy in the world, is located in Pereira Barreto, in the State of São Paulo.
This project will thus be the largest ever developed, built, and operated by EDP, being the fifth largest solar park in Brazil. The inauguration, that took place today, was attended by the group's executive president, Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, Rodrigo Garcia, deputy governor of the State of São Paulo, and Cassiano Quevedo Rosas de Ávila, under State Secretary for Energy and Mining.
The solar complex, comprising five parks, will have an annual production capacity of 547.000 MWh, distributed over nearly 600,000 photo-voltaic panels. The annually generated energy will be enough to supply a city with over 750,000 inhabitants.
The photo-voltaic park has a strong impact on the region's socio-economic development, as it contributes sustainability to job creation: it has generated 1500 thousand jobs, more than half (56%) at the regional level. And it is also fully in line with the ambitious energy transition commitments assumed by EDP, estimating that it will avoid the emittance of more than 150 tons of CO2, annually.
“Pereira Barreto represents the company's bet on diversification, in this case, in photo-voltaic solar energy. Brazil is a key market for the realization of our Business Plan. The expectation is even to inaugurate, in the medium and long term, other similar projects in the region, generating even more jobs and contributing to the environments' health. We want to change tomorrow, today”, says Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, Executive President of EDP and EDP Renováveis.
The company that will commercialize the green energy of this large solar project will be EDP Brasil (ENBR3), through its distributor, the third-largest private trader and the largest retail trader in the Brazilian market.
This new EDP Renováveis park materializes another step in the solid path that the group has been following, for over a decade, in favor of sustainable alternatives that guarantee the decarbonization of the planet. EDP is committed to being an active and effective voice in this field, betting on renewable projects, but also promoting the needed collective effort to build a greener future for all. It is in this context that it will reach COP 26, which will start at the end of this month, with the even stronger ambition of being a leader in the energy transition.
