EDP among the world's largest leaders in the fight against climate change
EDP stands out for the fifth consecutive year as a world leader in the fight against climate change. The non-governmental organization CDP also distinguished the company for the first time with the highest level of performance in water management.
EDP has just been distinguished with the highest level of performance (Leadership: A-) in the fight against climate change and sits among the companies with the best practices in managing risks and opportunities in the field of climate worldwide for the fifth consecutive year. With this assessment, given by the non-governmental organization CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), EDP is the best ranked Portuguese company in the energy sector and is among the 22 utility companies from 15 countries with the best performance in this area.
In another category, Water Security - which evaluates what companies reduced risks the most and used water resource management opportunities the best - EDP reached Leadership level: A for the first time, improving the performance level compared to the previous year.
These results reflect the commitment to good practices and sustainable projects that EDP undertook more than a decade ago, placing it today at the forefront of the energy transition. A process that led the group to commit itself to decisive goals for fighting climate change, namely ensuring, until 2022, that 78% of the installed energy capacity comes from renewable sources, specific CO2 emissions will be reduced by 65% (compared to 2005), 30% of the light vehicle fleet is electric, and the energy efficiency of products and services for customers will be reinforced, among other measures.
CDP is the non-governmental organization that is considered as the reference for investors in terms of climate change and management of environmental impacts, and it annually elects a limited group of companies and institutions with the best practices in these areas.
The organization classifies companies into four performance levels, with EDPobtaining the highest level (Leadership), characterized by the excellence of its strategy and climate action.
In this classification, more than eight thousand companies are evaluated, which represents more than 50% of the market capitalization worldwide, and this information is made available to financial investors. Of these eight thousand, only 7% of Electric Utilities earned the Leadership rating in CDP Climate and 9% in CDP Water Security.
