Distribution grid operation support
In late 2015 EDP installed, in the University of Évora, the first electricity storage solution connected to a medium voltage grid, using stationary lithium-ion batteries with 274 kW and a 360 kWh storage capacity.
This pilot project tests and implements several energy storage solutions, with the goal of adapting them to several case studies involving the management of distribution grids, both isolatedly and integrated in a broader control perspective.
The current electricity grid context, shaped by demanding challenges such as market liberalization, the increasing penetration of distributed generation, the emergence of self-consumption, the advent of electric mobility, flexibility in demand, and the increasingly active role of grid customers, bolsters the need to adopt innovative strategies and disruptive technologies for the management of distribution grids.
The Energy Storage project is part of this new smart grid paradigm, where EDP is already recognized as a pioneer, thanks to the Inovgrid project.
