EDP starts operation of distributed generation projects in 15 Decathlon sites in Italy
EDP, through EDP Energia Italia, a European leader in distributed solar generation, has successfully finished the installation and started operating decentralized solar installations in 15 Decathlon facilities in Italy.
EDP is deploying 2.4 MWp of solar capacity across Decathlon sites located in Como (Lombardy), Vercelli (Piedmont), Novara (Piedmont), Voghera (Lombardy), Moncalieri (Piedmont), Grugliasco (Piedmont), Reggio Emilia (Emilia-Romagna), Curtatone (Lombardy), Bassano (Veneto), Livorno (Tuscany), Perugia (Umbria), Tor Vergata (Rome-Lazio), Casoria (Campania), Corigliano (Calabria), and Catania (Sicily).
Together, these PV systems will generate close to 3 GWh of clean electricity each year, enough to power core daily operations across these Decathlon facilities. By producing energy onsite, these systems reduce reliance on the grid, enhance operational energy autonomy, improve cost efficiency through competitive energy sourcing, and contribute to a more sustainable energy model for the company’s activities.
“For EDP, signing a contract with a large account like Decathlon across six European countries is a clear demonstration of our capabilities and the strength of our teams in delivering high-quality projects that support the energy transition wherever we operate. The rooftop solar installations across Decathlon’s facilities in Italy provide tangible benefits by reducing exposure to electricity market volatility and optimizing long-term operational costs. In Italy, where commercial energy demand is high and grid constraints persist in certain regions, distributed generation is a key solution for advancing a more efficient and flexible energy model”, highlights António Ricciardi, head of Client Solutions business in Europe at EDP.
This project is part of a multi-geography agreement signed in 2023 between EDP and Decathlon, a global multi-specialist sports brand. Through this partnership, EDP will install up to 12 MWp of rooftop solar capacity across Decathlon facilities in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and France. The ability to implement a unified solar strategy across several countries with the same partner highlights EDP’s reliability and strength as a long-term energy partner for international businesses operating in multiple markets. This streamlined approach also enables Decathlon to accelerate progress toward its sustainability goals.
EDP entered the Italian market in 2010 with the establishment of EDP Renewables, focused on the development of utility-scale wind and solar projects, and expanded its footprint in 2019 with the launch of EDP Energia Italia, focused on decentralized solar generation.
Currently, EDP Energia Italia has contracted over 150 MWp of distributed solar capacity in Italian corporate consumers across nearly 1,400 installations. EDP also manages on-site solar installations paired with storage in Italy, creating an optimal environment for energy management and reducing the dependency on the energy grid.
