EDP acquires solar plant to increase clean energy supply to Selenis in Northern Italy
EDP, European leader in energy solutions for clients, through EDP Energia Italia, is extending its renewable energy solutions for Selenis, a premium provider of innovative copolyesters, part of the IMG Group, through a 15-year agreement that combines dedicated renewable power with ownership of a nearby solar asset. As part of the deal, EDP has acquired 100% of Sirio1, the owner of a 5.5 MWp ground-mounted photovoltaic plant adjacent to Selenis’ manufacturing facility in San Giorgio di Nogaro, in northeastern Italy.
Rather than simply supplying renewable electricity, EDP is taking responsibility for the asset and for the technical work required to transform it into a self-consumption solution for the customer. Over the coming months, EDP will carry out the electrical reconfiguration, medium-voltage works and private interconnection required to integrate the existing operating plant directly with IMG Group’s electrical substation. Once operational, the solution is expected to deliver approximately 7.4 GWh of renewable electricity annually, covering more than 25% of the site’s annual electricity consumption.
The integrated structure strengthens EDP’s role as an energy partner to Selenis: EDP owns the renewable asset, develops the connection infrastructure, and supplies the resulting clean electricity under a long-term agreement. For Selenis, this creates greater predictability in energy costs, reduces exposure to electricity market current high prices and volatility, and increases the share of renewable energy used at its industrial site, supporting its sustainability objectives.
The new agreement builds on the partnership between EDP Energia Italia and IMG Group. In 2024, EDP commissioned a 1.7 MWp solar installation at the same site. With this additional project, EDP is extending the range of energy solutions it can provide to the customer, from on-site solar generation to a dedicated renewable supply solution enabled by a nearby operational plant and a direct private connection.
The transaction marks an important milestone for EDP Energia Italia, representing the company’s first acquisition of a renewable energy SPV, and subsequent conversion of the asset into a self-consumption solution for an industrial customer in Italy. By combining the acquisition of an operating renewable energy asset with a 15-year renewable energy agreement and the development of dedicated private connection infrastructure, EDP can tailor both the physical and commercial solution to the specific energy needs of each customer.
For energy-intensive industrial operations, access to locally generated renewable electricity can strengthen competitiveness as well as sustainability. Through this agreement, Selenis will benefit from a more predictable renewable energy supply, greater protection from electricity market fluctuations, and a lower carbon footprint associated with its operations.
