From the first moment, EDP mobilized teams and resources to respond to the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine.
Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, EDP, from the very first moment, as part of its Volunteer Program, mobilized teams and resources to respond to the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine, implementing a series of actions and initiatives.
Support measures for Ukraine
From the first moment of the conflict in Ukraine, following the invasion of the country by Russia, EDP developed a series of initiatives to articulate a concerted response that met the real needs of the Ukrainian population, the countries that received Ukrainian refugees, and also the organizations - such as the Red Cross and Doctors of the World - that were on the ground.
Actions and initiatives implemented
Delivery of basic necessities and financial donations
Immediately after the outbreak of the conflict, the aid mobilized by EDP was directed at organizations that were on the ground supporting the victims, such as the Red Cross and Doctors of the World, among others, by delivering basic necessities and direct financial donations.
In this context, from March 14 to April 13, 2022, EDP Brasil, for example, also promoted a campaign to raise donations for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which supports millions of refugees who need help to survive and ensure the protection of their rights; and the Red Cross, whose mission is to protect and assist victims of war and violence.
Temporary accommodation for refugees and supply of energy to reception centers
EDP developed a front to support refugees in Portugal and other countries where it operates, which involved providing temporary accommodation for Ukrainian refugees and supplying energy to reception centers.
Creating job opportunities and teaching local languages
Job opportunities were created for refugees and local language teaching was promoted in different parts of Europe where refugees were received.
Solidarity weekend and art auction
A solidarity weekend was organized (May 7 and 8, 2022) at the MAAT, in Lisbon, and also an art auction, promoted by the EDP Foundation, with contributions from partner artists. In both cases, the proceeds reverted to support for refugees.
EDP doubled the ticket sales for that weekend, donating 20,000 euros to Doctors of the World. This association delivered medical supplies and medicines to Ukrainian hospitals, and also provided medical care in collective shelters, responding to the needs of those fleeing the country and crossing the borders.
Ukraine Solidarity Support Initiative
As part of this initiative, an energy discount (for three months) was offered to EDP Comercial customers who took in Ukrainian refugees.
Support for Ukrainian refugees in Poland
EDP donated half a million euros to the Biedronka Foundation, created by Jerónimo Martins Poland, for the distribution of food products among the refugees. Due to the EDP Group's presence in Poland, Romania and Hungary, there is regular contact with the local authorities, which were also given the necessary help to support the communities on the border with Ukraine.
Support to Doctors of the World in Ukraine
As a response to the emergency situation experienced in Ukraine, the EDP Foundation developed several support initiatives, including a donation of 20 thousand euros to the NGO Doctors of the World.
On the front line in Ukraine
The EDP Foundation donated 20 thousand Euros to the NGO Doctors of the World, to support emergency humanitarian responses in Ukraine. Half of the amount came from ticket sales at MAAT - Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) in Lisbon, on the weekend of May 7 and 8, 2022, an amount the Foundation has pledged to double.
Doctors of the World provides humanitarian aid and cooperation for development and ensures the delivery of medical materials and medicines to Ukrainian hospitals, as well as providing medical care in collective shelters for those who crossed the borders of Ukraine.
This initiative was just one of several undertaken by EDP in response to the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine, involving resources and teams in several countries where the group is present.
Among the various initiatives promoted, we highlight, for example, the financial support to organizations that were on the ground supporting the populations, the delivery of essential goods collected with the support of employees and customers, the offer of equipment, electrical material or energy gifts to families who welcomed refugees in Portugal.
EDP and Biedronka Foundation together in support of Ukrainian refugees in Poland
EDP Renováveis (EDPR), established, in March 2022, an agreement with the Biedronka Foundation - a non-profit entity, created in 2020 by Jerónimo Martins Poland - in order to reinforce the support to Ukrainian refugees located in Poland.
Under the agreement signed between the two entities, EDP made a donation of 500 thousand Euros, used by the Biedronka Foundation to distribute food to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, in conjunction with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working in the field, ensuring emergency support to all those who left Ukrainian territory, fleeing to Poland.
In order to respond to the humanitarian crisis, alongside the donation made by EDP, resources and teams were mobilized in the impacted communities, with the donation of essential goods and direct economic assistance being given to organizations that were on the front line, such as the Red Cross and Doctors of the World.
Taking advantage of EDP's presence in Poland, Romania and Hungary, regular contacts were established with the local authorities, which were also given help to support the communities on the border with Ukraine.
At the same time, EDP volunteers undertook various local initiatives to help Ukrainian refugees in Portugal and other countries.
Help to Ukraine EDPR 2022 Brazil
In order to support Ukrainian families affected by the war, EDP Brasil developed a campaign to collect donations to UNHCR and Red Cross.
Supporting those who support
EDP Brasil, aware of the war in Ukraine, joined some organizations and partners to provide support to Ukrainian families.
From March 14 to April 13, 2022, EDP promoted a campaign to raise donations for two organizations, chosen for their recognized humanitarian work worldwide and because, at that time, they were already on the ground supporting the Ukrainian population. They are:
- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), supports millions of refugees who need help to survive and ensure their rights are protected.
- The Red Cross - is an independent humanitarian organization whose mission is to protect and assist victims of war and violence.
