In Spain, actions for the conservation of the red kite.
The project "Actions for the conservation of the red kite in Castilla y León", supported by EDP, aimed to implement conservation actions for the red kite, an endangered species in the Iberian Peninsula.
Giving wings to the future of the kite
From 2014 to 2020, EDP supported the project "Actions for the conservation of the kite in Castilla y León" to promote the conservation of the kite, an endangered species on the Iberian Peninsula. Thanks to this project, it was possible to deepen knowledge about the species, its distribution, population and trends, as well as to identify the main threats.
Main objectives of the program
The objectives of the program are to deepen the knowledge about the biology of the kite, fundamentally through the use of GPS transmitters in several specimens, in order to know the local, dispersive and migratory movements; their use of the territory, the availability of food resources and the factors of non-natural mortality.
In this way, it becomes possible to:
- Implement actions that favor and increase food resources.
- Minimize the causes of non-natural mortality of the species.
- Increase surveillance and minimize discomfort during the reproductive period and during the stay in winter shelters.
- Promote outreach and awareness programs to society.
The book "The Red Kite. Biology and Conservation"
Under this project, the book "The Red Kite. Biology and conservation", the result of more than five years of study, analysis and monitoring of the Red Kite, written by some of the most renowned and experienced Spanish ornithologists, has been published. The work presents data on the taxonomy, biology, demography, threats and conservation of this bird of prey worldwide.
The authors have conducted a worldwide literature review on the distribution and population of the kite, making this publication the largest, most detailed and up-to-date compendium of information on this species.
