In the past March 2019, EDP International was selected through international public tender to develop a master plan for the development of the Seychelles electricity system with the aim of achieving a penetration of 15% of energy from renewable sources by 2030 on the islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue – The Electricity Master Plan for Seychelles
Funded by the "Renewable energy development and energy efficiency improvements in the Indian Ocean Commission (ENERGIES Program) - EDF / 2012 / 023-041", the 5-month project (ends at the end of August) aims at developing an high level master plan capable to guide the Public Utilities Comission (PUC – local utility for electricity, water and sewer) and the Seychelles Energy Commission (SEC) at regulatory, political, techno-economic and social level in the coming 10 years in order to be able to increase renewable generation, reduce dependence on oil and reduce energy intensity in the tree main islands
EDP Internacional counts with teams from NEW R&D and Labelec to carry out the work, which includes a diverse range of activities, from analysis of the distribution network and the island's production system, to analysis of the current regulation and energy policy of the country, forecasting the evolution of consumption of electricity, planning of the development of distribution network and power generation to achieve the defined objectives, and others.
In the first half of April, teams from the three companies (NEW R&D, Labelec and International) travelled to Mahe and Praslin (main Seychelles islands) to carry out the first of three missions. The objective of the mission was to understand better the current situation of the electric system and to understand the concerns and expectations of the main stakeholders (Government, Utility, NGOs, large customers, investors) on what regards the current state of the electric system and its possibilities of evolution.
The two-week mission ended with a NEW R&D-led public workshop where the main objective was to promote discussion among stakeholders about the future of the Seychelles electricity system.
