Life and work: an acquis to keep the thought alive
To offer to the public, investigation or just for appreciation, Professor Eduardo Lourenço Archive, who past away on December first, 2020, is a way to preserve the memory of one of the great names of the Portuguese philosophy and essay. The enormous archive contemplates the author’s manuscripts that document the creative process of his works and countless amount of letters exchanged with national and foreign personalities, that help in the understanding of his biography and academic path.
To reunite, organize, and provide public access to all documentation and writings in the archive of one of the greatest Portuguese minds is a public-importance work that pays homage to its contribution to Portuguese culture. Of an unquestionable value, professor Eduardo Lourenço was a scholar of the culture and identity of our country, and a hallmark that will be preserved for the current and future generations. The provision of the acquis that was left by the professor is a way to make his thought last, as well as to promote its continuity along with other brilliant minds’ thinking.
There are thousands of documents and manuscripts that make the archive, making this the largest collection of the Portuguese Contemporary Culture Archive in the National Library. Much more than gathering the archive of one of the greatest Portuguese intellectuals, it’s also necessary to organize and work through the material, to provide for the public. In this sense, EDP Foundation and the National Library, have been working on the treatment, conservation, inventorying, and listing of all of the acquis.
Besides the preservation of his vast work, the organization of his manuscripts, which are in great part unique, will open new doors for the investigators’ work in several areas. The work on gathering data for the completion of his work is already running as well as the countless materials for the development and upgrade of the website dedicated to the life and work of the professor.
