In Brazil, access to public lighting for underprivileged communities.
EDP, partnered with the Liter of Light Brazil project, proceeded to the installation of solar energy stations in communities that aren’t covered by the public energy distribution grid. The solution for the adopchangeover lighting encompasses PVC pipes, a battery that stores energy captured throughout the day, and a LED bulb protected by a PET bottle.
Lighting the path to the future
EDP has been following their great purposes to fruition: using power to take care, each time better, of the communities where they’re present. In this context, in 2019 and 2021, and partnered with the Liter of Light Brazil, they proceeded to the installation of solar energy stations that benefited several underprivileged communities. Liter of Light is an organization present in over 15 countries, that have the goal to improve people’s quality of life through sustainable lighting solutions.
In December 2019, EDP and Liter of Light moved forward with the installation of 60 solar power stations in Nova Jabaeté’s community, in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The used technology is simple, economical, and ecologically sustainable, composed of plastic bottles, solar panels, and LED bulbs.
Around 1.200 people benefited from this installation, carried out by 50 EDP volunteers, together with elements of the community itself. The electrification enables, for example, more safety for the people who take walks at night and boosts commerce and nocturnal leisure activities.
In December 2021, Liter of Light and EDP installed 30 stations in the area of Sahy’s Beach, in São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil, directly benefiting Vila Sahy’s communities. The Baleia Verde and Lobo Guará. Around 120 families benefited from this installation, carried through by 11 volunteers and elements of the communities themselves.
These interventions occurred in moments when communities were being targeted for regulation processing, which is why, up until then, these didn’t benefit from the public electricity distribution grid.
In 2021, Liter of Light participated in Starter Business Acceleration, an EDP’s Group global acceleration program, having been one of the ten finalists.
